Gorgeous silken pads provide a rather misleadingly tranquil start to ‘Descent Into The Abyss’. Then POW! In comes an awesome steamroller of a sequence. The foot is put down further on the accelerator as an insistent rhythm and stunning laser flashing lead flash over the top. This is like seventies Jarre at its most melodic but also most powerful. What we have here must be one of the most infectious pieces of music I have heard in a long time. It just wants to make you punch the air in ecstasy! We return to those lovely pads again. Things become very moody and a bass sequence can just be heard very low in the mix. Subtle brooding virtual guitar licks give that extra bite without going ape. The mood lightens slightly as a water droplet type sequence takes over as the main focus. All very beautiful it is too but also with more than a twist of melancholy. This sequence builds and morphs becoming more like a melodic lead line in its own right and what an exquisite melody it is too. Things just get better and better as yet another sublime lead falls into formation with the sequence. Electronic Music of the very highest order. Things become rather scary for ‘Deep Breathing’. Dark foreboding underwater sounds create a very unsettling atmosphere. Samples of stressed underwater communications can be heard- it doesn’t end happily.

In the eighth minute a tinkling sequence starts up and the mood is lifted as a feeling of euphoria starts to develop. A deep reverberation throb provides a rather ominous introduction to the four-part title track. Slow but vast deep drums, as if coming from the very depths of Hell, send a chill down the spine. These are then juxtapositioned by a scintillating lead line, then another even more uplifting one that makes you feel as though you are soaring high in the sky leaving all the Earthly troubles beneath you. A ball breaking thunderous sequence forms, the rhythm alters and a new tron lead surges over the top. Yet another lead takes over as we blast forward with even greater vigour. The oomph level hasn’t reached max yet though as a fresh blistering sequence joins the fray with steam hissing madly from pounding pistons. This is so exciting. It’s impossible not to let yourself be completely taken over with the euphoric energy. I know on first listening to this I was jumping round the room like a crazy thing. Even now after many, many listens it’s hard to keep myself still enough in order to type. We are given some release in the eleventh minute when ethereal, even angelic, atmospherics take over. But even here there is something of an edginess. A sequence slowly starts to reassert itself- and what a sequence! Mellotron returns softening proceedings a little until we up the gears once more for a rousing finale.

‘Ascent From the Abyss’ is a short track creating a gently melodic but also melancholy atmosphere, lead lines being sensitive and subtle. The track seems rather reflective, revisiting ideas from earlier in the album and thus provides a good finish. The first (self titled) album by Bone Idol was good, made up of tracks composed over a very long period of time. But ‘….. Entropy’, composed as a proper album in its own right is a couple of leagues above that one. Indeed I would have thought it is destined to be one of the very best albums of 2006. (DL)
