All Our Ancestors
Percussion and a modulating synth drone ooze from the speakers accompanied by mysterious shimmers. A flute is added creating the effect of the wind blowing over a mysterious landscape. Extremely vivid images are conjured up, the flute playing is superb and is given plenty of space over the dark backing to maximise the haunting way it is used.

The second track is more rhythmic combining water drums, flute and excellent synth textures. The images this time are more of a desert caravan and vast sand dunes. The next piece uses a slow rhythm, percussive effects and a very effective synth lead. The intriguingly titled ‘Stillpoint in Motion’ is the spookiest so far, occasionally rhythmic but with what sounds like objects blowing in the wind and the flute, this time making me think more of China.

The following track follows the formula of rhythm, percussion, synths and flute but yet another image is formed, again one of heat but this time a haze over the Nile, nothing moving except objects floating on the current. The penultimate number is another eerie one, deep drones underpin a melodic motif. Even deeper slabs of sound contrast with the melody effectively but heightening the feel of unease that permeates the piece. The last track ‘Shiva Descending’ starts with Tibetan bells over a harmonium backing with the flute playing as devastating as ever. The track fades away but this is not the end, there is still time for the haunting to return. (DL)
