Ian Boddy Ambient Atmospheres |
This is one of Ian's Library Music projects. For those that don't know already Library Music is intended to be used by TV / Film producers as well as advertisers etc. There tend to be many tracks on such CDs so they are nearly always short. All the tracks here for instance are of the, roughly, two to three minute duration. There are 23 proper tracks with additional shorter edits of each tagged on to the end. When I first received it I expected it to be full of dreamy drones. And sure there are tracks like that such as 'Amorphous', 'Ancient Days', 'Golden Vista' and 'Distant Dreams' but even these are so lush and exquisite that they are a pleasure to listen and let oneself get lost in.
'Earth Spirit' and 'Echoes' on the other hand are truly beautiful tracks mixing metallic bell like tones (as does 'Mellow Vibe'), symphonic pads and wordless Female vocals. They really are wonderful pieces of music in their own right and almost a sin to be just available on a project such as this. There are even gently rhythmic tracks such as 'New World' which might not be million mile an hour stormers but they will still get your head nodding and feet tapping the floor in very pleasant manner indeed. Some of them combine synth tones and samples such as that of a river in 'By the Water' and the sea (I think) with 'Distant Shores'. There are even some sequencer numbers such as 'Moments of Time', 'Crossing the Expanse' (both sounding rather like Software actually) and 'Trance World'. Some like 'Reverence', 'Gentle Air', 'Frozen in Time', 'Lonely' and 'Crystal Lake' even have a spellbinding spiritual feel to them. Ian has always been a good Pianist as 'Naïve' amply demonstrates being basically a piano solo with tranquil synth backing.
So there is a lot of ground covered here and some truly stunning pieces of music. For me this is Ian's finest collection of music aimed at the Library Music market and is by far the best at also being a proper album to just sit down and listen to. I loved it. (DL)
