Not sure which came out first this album or 'Realm of Possibility'. Of the two this one is somewhat more conventional though probably on the more rhythmic end of the 'ambient' style.
We begin with 'Remains of Summer – Part 1' in a relaxing way with faint birdsong and electronic watery effects. The electronics get gradually more prominent being looped to give a semblance of structure. 'Part 2' follows a very similar pattern. The title track has a pleasant percussive loop, subliminal melodies drifting through the air. The lead lines and loop become more prominent as the track progresses. Things evolve in a subtle way and before you know it we have quite a groove on our hands - not Earth shattering stuff but quite powerful within the realms of ambient music. 'Cathedral' starts with distorted chatter then more birdsong, electronic drones shimmering in the background. An excellent psychedelic sequence / loop starts up with slightly Eastern stylings. It got my foot tapping, the lovely pulsations being chilled rather than forceful. At seventeen minutes it's the longest track on the album but also the best, absolutely spellbinding.
'Settling Ground' features yet another cool restrained rhythmic loop but it's somewhat odder, combined with gentle tinkling piano one moment and whooshing effects the next. 'Premonition and Flight' takes a darker turn as spooky / ominous sounds mix with yet more rhythmic loops. 'From a Distant Shore' is initially a subtle collage of sounds, effects and percussives. Its all rather floating until rhythm, taking many different forms becomes the main feature. It's certainly an intriguing and inventive combination of sounds. (DL)
Ik ben er niet zeker van wat er eerst uitkwam, deze of 'Realm of Possibility'. Deze is wat conventioneler doch meer aan de ritmische kant van de ambient. We beginnen "Remains of Summer – part 1" op een relaxte manier, met verre vogelgeluiden en elektronische watereffecten. De elektronische klanken komen wat meer naar voren en geven een soort van geloopte structuur aan het geheel.
"Part 2" volgt een gelijkaardig patroon. De titeltrack heeft een prettige percussieve loop met af en toe wat melodische aandelen. Naarmate de track verder gaat komen de solo en het ritme meer op de voorgrond. De track evolueert verder heel subtiel en voor je het weet zit je midden in een heuse groove – vrij krachtig in de termen van de ambient. "Cathedral" start met vervormd geroezemoes en vogelgeluiden, elektronische drones ruisen op de achtergrond. Een uitstekende psychedelische sequence/loop met een licht Oosters tintje wordt nu gestart. Het ritme zat al in mijn voeten, het is niet heftig maar erg doeltreffend. Met zijn 17 minuten is dit de langste track van het album en zeker ook de beste.
"Settling Ground" laat ook een coole ingehouden loop horen, iets aparts eigenlijk en wordt gecombineerd met fijn pianogetokkel enerzijds en sci-fi effecten anderzijds. "Premonition and Flight" is wat donkerder met zijn spookachtige en onheilspellende klanken, alsook met nog meer ritmische loops. "From a Distant Shore" is eigenlijk een subtiele collage van klanken, effecten en percussie. Allemaal erg zwevend totdat het ritme, in zijn vele vormen, het overneemt. Dit is zeker een uitzonderlijke en opmerkelijke combinatie van klanken. (DL)
