Circular Divergent

Circular is the side project of Neural Network's Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik along with Bjarte Andreassen. Even though there are eighteen index points the music, for the most part, flows together as one long track. From atmospheric dark aquatic beginnings we slowly rise to the surface with the sound of the wind and water lapping on the shore.

Deep drones and percussive effects then mix together to create quite an eerie, alone late at night in a derelict harbour, type feel. A slow squelchy rhythmic loop starts up low in the mix which is then replaced by a more mechanical sounding one. We then get a vocal sample informing us that 'the sun is coming up in twenty minutes'. The next set of images created in the mind however are much more cosmic. Metallic percussives develop into the soft chiming of a gong surrounded by sonic shimmers and other clanging effects. Next we get some rather odd psychological commentary. Maybe this album is as much about one's inner space as out of this world concepts. The sound of a warning bell combines with more dark effects and percussives developing quite a sinister and uneasy feel. A storm and gentle rain now drive away what had become a really intense section of the CD.

Deep bass drones then provide a background over which nice soothing, faintly melodic, pads drift. An infectious rhythmic loop starts up as we enter the most accessible passage of the album so far. It isn't too forceful though, placed just right in the mix. The storm can still be heard in the background though it is more relaxing than aggressive. More loops continue through to the next section. This time they have a rather shuffling quality and the warning bell returns as the mood seems to be getting uneasy again. From uneasy we move to strange as soft deep drones compete with what sounds like a needle coming to the end of an LP hissing and clicking but not picking up.

We are kept on our toes as a return is made to a rather clangy sector of the cosmos. You never know what to expect next. I certainly wouldn't have predicted a soft breezy flute sound for instance but that is exactly what we get- over a bass line of the double bass variety. This all lasts only about a minute however before cosmic twitters, sax and more strident flute make am entrance. 'Alpha Centauri' updated by thirty years perhaps?! A few seconds of drumming next (of course!) then something about being' in an institution'- well of course we are! Soft pads normalise proceedings for a time before footsteps and the creaking of doors return us to darker realms. Computer type bleeps and twitters follow on then a soft, quite faint, rhythmic loop pleasantly hangs there rather than intrudes. It isn't long before we return to more on the edge of nightmare stuff.

Windy drones conjure up pictures of a futuristic subway then loads of cosmic twitters and effects take us back to space. The last piece is curious indeed as it stands apart from the rest as a separate track which is both gently rhythmic and melodic. It is rather delicate and quite beautiful actually and even though I am sure there are good reasons why it was included it seemed to have nothing to do with the rest of the album which was one hell of a deeply atmospheric and often disturbing trip. Circular is een ander project van Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik van Neural Network, deze maal tezamen met Bjork Andreassen. Zelfs al zijn er 18 indexpunten, toch komt deze CD over als één geheel. Vanuit een atmosferisch onderwaterachtig begin komen we langzaam naar het oppervlak met het geluid van de wind en brekende golven. Diepe drones en percussieve effecten zorgen dan verder voor een onheilspellend sfeertje, alsof je je helemaal alleen bevindt in een ongure havenbuurt. Laag in de mix start er een trage ritmische loop die later vervangen wordt door een meer mechanische.

Dan krijgen we een stemsampel die ons informeert dat de zon opkomt binnen 20 minuten. De volgende beelden die in mijn geest gecreëerd worden zijn meer kosmisch. Mechanische percussie ontwikkelt zich tot een gong, omgeven door sonische schemeringen en andere rammelende effecten. Verder krijgen we nog wat gek-klinkend psychologisch commentaar. Dit album gaat misschien eerder over iemand zijn innerlijke ruimte dan over de wereld buiten de onze. Het geluid van een alarmbel, donkere effecten en percussie creëren een sinister en ongemakkelijk gevoel. Storm en een zachte regen verdrijven deze nu zeer intense sectie van deze CD. Diepe basdrones leveren nu de achtergrond waarover zwevende, vrij melodische paden zich ontwikkelen. Een aanstekelijk ritme start als we het meest toegankelijke stuk van de CD naderen. Dit is niet te krachtig, de mix zit net goed. De storm is nog steeds hoorbaar op de achtergrond maar werkt eerder relaxerend dan agressief. Meer loops leiden ons naar de volgende sectie. Deze keer zijn ze wat schuifelend en ook de alarmbel keert terug met haar ongemakkelijk gevoel.

Van ongemakkelijk gaan we naar vreemd, met zachte drones die strijden met klanken zoals het einde van een oude LP – een naald die blijft hangen. We blijven op het puntje van onze stoel zitten als we terugkeren naar een erg vreemd gedeelte van de kosmos. Hier weet je niet wat te verwachten. Ik had hier zeker geen zachte fluitklank verwacht, maar dat is wat we krijgen – alsook een soort van contrabaslijn. Dit houdt een minuutje aan alvorens kosmische twitters, sax en nog een fluit hun intrede doen. 'Alpha-Centaur' na een update van 30 jaar misschien? Dan enkele seconden drums (natuurlijk!) en iets over 'in een instelling verblijven' – ja natuurlijk doen we dat! Zachte paden voeren terug wat normale klanken aan alvorens voetstappen en krakende deuren ons terug naar het duister leiden.
