Paul Anthony City of Wire Play: Lo-Fi   Mid-Fi   Hi-Fi   Download: Lo-Fi   Mid-Fi   Hi-Fi (Excerpt from track 'The City of Wire') |
Subtlety and even moodiness get a look in on the second half with 'Padded Cell' and 'Dreaming of Wire' for instance. These important elements give the album balance and stop you from becoming punch drunk. Every track keeps the interest throughout with constant changes in tempo and mood.
This is the third release on Neu Harmony CDR. We couldn't really believe our luck at receiving it. The first two releases by Kubusschnitt and Morbius were one hell of a way of getting our new label underway and we thought keeping up the quality might prove difficult and then something like this comes bounding through the letter box demanding to be played. No sooner has the CD Paul sent us finished and we are straight on the phone, we just had to have him for the label.
It is hard to pin-point who he sounds like, the only person I can really think of would be Robert Schroeder but given a much more 90s treatment and to be honest with far better melodies.
His third track is even called 'Space Detective' a title which Robert also picked for one of his tracks. It wasn't until after I had already thought of Schroeder that I actually discovered that Paul is a mega fan of his. Yet don't expect a Robert Schroeder sound alike album. There are also hints at eighties TD, Jarre and occasionally Kraftwerk but the resulting style is all his own. 'Space Detective', 'Phobos' and others on the album really wouldn't be safe to drive to, especially if you are on nine points already as a ban would be certain.
You could even imagine tracks such as 'Chronos The Demon' with its 100 mile an hour sequence being used for F14 dogfight sequences in 'Top Gun' type films. As well as moodiness and power however 'City of Wire' also gives you lighter moments with tracks such as 'Nightfall', 'Cyrosleep' and 'Leaving The City'.
Cracking good tunes, brilliant sequences and light and shade go to make this an irresistible album. (DL)
