Les Jumeaux
Cobalt
Les Jumeaux is the alter ego of the Sheffield twins Klive & Nigel Humberstone, better known as In The Nursery. Cobalt is the follow up to their debut album 'Feathercut' released in 1996, and appears to be an exercise in "anything you can do, I can do better". From the opening title track, which collides a wicked Prodigy groove with orchestration (and pulls it off!), to the slight dubbed out bliss of the Scorn-like 'Mizmar', then to 'Shin Tiao' which, with its seductive whispered vocal, would sit snugly on any latterday Delerium album, to the laid-back 'Whitetown' of Strange. The album has touched four solid bases on its first four tracks! Supplemented by additional remixes from Beaumont Hannant (UK), Lunatic Eclipse (DE) and The Protagonist (SE) the album slips on musical mask after mask, having more faces than Fu Manchu, which somehow hang together in their own cosmopolitan 'hood. You somehow get the feeling that K & N have wandered through the Great Electronic Book of Music, cutting and arranging pieces to create a definitive, condensed collage. Further excursions bring the stripped down Industry of 'Boot Pick', the Orb-like kickin' rhythms of 'Tungsten', the Hannant-enhanced 'Futur', a certified chill out single if ever there was one, to the solid, Haujobb-styled 'Lunatic Eclipse' remix of 'Cyflo'. So many comparisons may be derisory, suffice to say this is one bullseye of electronica which will have this listener hunting down 'Feathercut'. Don't be fooled by the E:Mit style cover, this is recommended without reservation. (SJH)
