Klaus Schulze Contemporary Works II

Here we have yet another box set from the master, Herr Schulze. Unlike CW1, which was 10 CDs, CW2 is one of Klaus' shorter outings of late, a mere 5 CDs (or 6, if you were one of the first 333 to order, but that disc, called 'Chinese Eyes,' is long gone - which is too bad, because it is excellent). This disc has a little of everything KS, from operatic-like vocals to pounding rhythms to great sequencing.

As has been his penchant of late, he continues to emphasize relaxed tracks that take their sweet time, falling into a smooth groove and sticking with it. Even the discs that claim to have multiple tracks often flow together as a more or less single piece of music. For example, the fifth disc 'Easy Listening' has the most tracks, but it keeps to a main theme throughout most of it, gradually building over nearly 80 epic minutes to its sweeping conclusion. My normal prejudices of Schulze's work, positive and negative, stay true to form on this set. I tend to shy away from the wailing female vocals, preferring them in smaller doses than they sometimes appear here, such as on 'There's No Mystery' and 'The Passion Burns' on disc four. The music would flow smoother and hold my attention better without numbers such as these, but it is still largely a successful outing.

Disc one, the single track 'Virtual Outback,' is a great beginning, 65 minutes of meandering through a variety of Schulze staples, from the jazzy electric piano to the classically-tinged brassy sound of horns, to processed vocals, everything flows seamlessly from one theme to the next. Sometimes the electronics dominate; sometimes the percussion takes centre stage. Something is always changing to keep the interest level high. By far the most classical section is disc three, 'Another Green Mile,' with lots of melancholy, another Schulze trademark. 'The Wisdom of the Leaves' is beautiful, with that lovely production so that the drums seem to echo from far away, silky smooth. There are many highs points.

If pressed to pick a favourite track, it would probably be 'Follow Me Down, Follow Me Down,' a cool half-hour track with a catchy rhythm and a sultry synth lead. Klaus knows how to set a mood and just go with it. CW1 had higher highs and lower lows. CW2 is for kicking back and just going with the flow. Nothing wrong with that. (PD)

Hier hebben we weer een box-set van de meester Herr Schulze. Niet zoals CW I, die 10 cd's bevatte, is CW II een van Klaus zijn 'kortere' uitlatingen en bevat 'maar' 5 cd's (of 6 als je één van de 333 eerste boxen had - maar deze extra CD "Chinese Eyes" is al lang uitgeput en dat is jammer want deze is uitstekend). Deze schuif heeft een beetje van alle soorten KS, van gekunstelde stemmen tot sterke ritmes en grootse sequences.

Als zo zijn gewoonte de laatste tijden, blijft hij relaxte tracks ontwikkelen die hun tijd vragen, een zachte groove ontwikkelen en daar rond blijven draaien. Zelfs de CD's met meer dan één track vloeien totaal in elkaar over om alzo één stuk muziek te vormen. Bijvoorbeeld, schijf 5 heeft het meeste aantal tracks, toch wordt er één hoofdthema aangehouden, geleidelijk aan voortbouwend tot 80 minuten epische muziek. Mijn gewone verwachtingen van Schulze's muziek, zowel positief als negatief, worden bewaarheid met deze set. Ik schrik zelf een beetje terug van de 'huilende' vrouwenstemmen en zou meestal willen dat ze minder dominant aanwezig waren zoals op "There's No Mystery" en op "The Passion Burns" van CD 4. Voor mij zou de muziek zachter overkomen en beter mijn aandacht kunnen vast houden zonder nummers als deze - toch is het een succesvolle uiting.

CD 1, met een enkele track "Virtual Outback" is een groots begin, 65 minuten gekronkel door een variëteit van Schulze-truukjes, van de jazzy elektrische piano tot het bijna klassiek getinte gebruik van de hoorns, verder naar bewerkte stemmen - alles vloeit naadloos in elkaar over, thema na thema. Soms domineert het elektronische, soms de percussie. Altijd verandert er wel iets om de interesse op een erg hoog niveau te houden. De meest klassieke sectie vinden we op CD 3, "Another Green Mile", met erg veel melancholie, ook een eigenschap van Schulze. "The Wisdom of the Leaves" is erg mooi en erg goed geproduced, met zijn drums die uit echo's schijnen te ontspruiten, zacht als zijde. Heel veel hoogtepunten in dit nummer.
