This is the latest album from Current and is their best so far. Below you will find reviews of my favourite tracks but the others aint bad either. 'Communion- before reality' is a sort of introduction to the album. It is based around a slow tinkling sequence with the sound of waves gently breaking on the shore.

'Ghost Trip' stokes up a much meaner sequence with slow rhythmic backing. It has an extremely cool feel to it. The pace quickens in the second minute and an excellent processed sample of the title is repeated from time to time forming part of an effective hook. I was already going to say this would be the 'single' from the album then I realised that it actually is! It can be bought as such along with two further mixes of the track. 'Crossfield' is just as easy to get on with. It is gently rhythmic with an excellent bass line then everything is stripped down to let the lovely little melodies shine through.

Like its predecessor a very effective groove is developed and it is hard to stop your head and feet moving to the music. Another good bass line emerges out of shimmering pads on 'Plaza Circular'. Little high register melodies float over the top giving the whole thing a rather laid back dreamy feeling. 'No Sign of Life' continues in a similar mood but this time the main feature is a gorgeous piano melody and an intriguing vocoded vocal. 'Sunday Sunburn' picks up the pace a little. The rhythm is superb and is another infectious body mover but not too dominating or overly speedy. 'Sign/Alien' is in real contrast as it is a short cosmic interlude.

'Sign/Human' is another short number, this time based around a heart beat type rhythm but it packs quite a bit into the two minute duration with an enjoyable lead line and gentle pads hitting the spot perfectly. A heavyish rhythm emerges out of swirling distorted vocal samples on 'Minor Abstraction' which develops into a top-notch melodic chugger that you can really let yourself go to. Great for air drumming too! 'Communion- Presence' is an atmospheric spacey finish with soft tones slowly fading into the distance punctuated by little squelchy electronic effects, though I could have done without the spoken text near the end but that is a minor quibble.

To sum up, this is a seriously enjoyable CD (especially the first half). Music for today rather than retro. Gently rhythmic with subtle melodies, yet full attitude. Highly recommended. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Dit is het nieuwste album van Current en meteen ook hun beste. Hieronder enkele beschrijvingen van mijn favoriete tracks maar de andere zijn zeker ook niet slecht. "Communion – before reality" is een soort van introductie voor dit album. Het is gebaseerd rond een trage twinkelende sequence met op de achtergrond het geluid van de golven, brekend op de kustlijn. "Ghost Trip" heeft een veel fellere sequence met een trage ritmische achtergrond. Dit voelt extreem 'cool' aan. Rond de tweede minuut wordt het nog wat heviger en een uitstekende, bewerkte tekstsample met de titelboodschap wordt van tijd tot tijd herhaald, heel effectief. Ik had bijna gezegd dat dit de single zou worden van het album tot ik me realiseerde dat dit ook werkelijk zo is!

Deze track kan inderdaad gekocht worden als single waar ook nog twee andere mixes op staan. "Crossfield" is ook een nummer dat je snel te pakken krijgt – een eenvoudig ritme en een uitstekende baslijn – later wordt alles terug afgebouwd om de mooie melodie de volle aandacht te geven. Zoals bij zijn voorganger wordt ook hier de groove verder uitgebouwd en kan je moeilijk je hoofd en voeten stilhouden. Weer een goede baslijn verrijst dan uit de schemerige paden bij de aanvang van "Plaza Circular". Een hoge melodie zweeft hierover en geeft deze track een rustig en dromerig gevoel. "No Sign of Life" vervolgt gelijkaardig, deze keer wordt de melodie echter overgenomen door een geweldige piano en een intrigerende vocoderstem. "Sunday Sunburn" heeft een geweldig ritme, niet te snel en laat je lichaam heerlijk bewegen. "Sign/Alien" is hiermee in totaal contrast, een kort kosmisch interludium.

"Sign/Human" is ook een kort nummer, dit keer gebaseerd rond een hartpulsritme en later gevolg door een aangename solo en zachte tapijtjes die precies doen wat je van hen verwacht. Een hevig ritme ontstaat uit draaiende vervormde stemmen op "Minor Abstraction", welk dan verder uitgebouwd wordt met een uitzonderlijk goede melodie – laat jezelf maar eens goed gaan! Dit is geweldig voor een partijtje luchtdrummen. "Communion-Presence" is een atmosferisch einde met zachte klanken die in- en uitfaden, bijgestaan door enkele elektronische effecten – ik zou echter zonder de gesproken teksten gekund hebben – een klein minpuntje. Om op te sommen – dit is een erg aangename cd (speciaal dan de eerste helft). Muziek van deze tijd, eerder dan retro, met zachte ritmes en subtiele melodieën, vol met hoogtepunten. Hoogst aanbevolen.
