SMD already reviewed Spacecraft's Inside The Inside CD. This release actually came before it. I enjoyed Inside The Inside quite a bit, but I would rank Cybersphere even higher, as it made my Best of 2001 list a couple issues back. This is the already honed Spacecraft sound, with soaring guitars, mellow electronics, and soft melodies, all perfectly balanced. I often hear hints of Pink Floyd mixed in their brand of Berlin school, and 'Creative Acceleration' continues that trend. Tony Gerber's guitar playfully lingers in the air in relaxed style, until a soft midtempo sequencer takes over a few minutes into it. Tired of the Teutonic style? Nah, me neither, and this is another great variant on it. This is a great way to start things off.

It flows right into 'Anima-Machina,' with distant primitive flutes, sounding more like Robert Rich than Gerber and company. Tinkling bells gently roll up and down, then add a heavy dose of reverb for a nice effect. Guitars take center stage briefly, then a really kick-ass sequence takes off again. The intensity takes off quickly as a loud organ joins the mix. These first two tracks are excellent, and at 11 minutes each pack a major one-two punch. 'Fragile' is a short, very mellow counterpoint, perfectly placed. Melancholy strings, cello perhaps, cry out beautifully. 'Tunnel' sounds like a track that should have made it on Michael Stearns M'Ocean CD or something of that vintage. The pulsing quality has a bit of a Phillip Glass feel as well. Diane Timmons' wordless vocals add just the right touches here. The synths warble and spiral out of control toward the end, in a good way.

'House of Gaudi' is dramatic organ music, another very strong piece. I also love 'Blue Planet Blue,' which sounds like fretless bass and harmonica, or the synth equivalents. This is very bluesy, smoky late-night bar music, fun stuff. Churning thunder, bright piano, and haunting vocal stylings meld together in 'Cloud Traveling.' 'Reach Out' is a surprisingly dark number for them, a cool creepy outer space journey. Spacecraft really does an amazing job of pulling off different styles, and making it all work. I have really liked several of their CDs, but this one is probably my favourite to date. (PD)

Nederlandstalige versie

Synth Music Direct gaf al een bespreking van 'Inside the Inside' van Spacecraft. Deze uitgave is eigenlijk van daarvoor. Ik hield wel wat van 'Inside the Inside' maar Cybersphere is stukken beter, deze bevindt zich in mijn "beste van 2001" lijst, een paar magazines terug. Dit is de zeer gewaardeerde Spacecraft klank, met zweverige gitaren, zachte elektronica, mooie melodieën, alles perfect in balans. Ik herken verbanden met Pink Floyd in hun muziek, zo ook in "Creative Acceleration".

Tony Gerber speelt prachtig relaxed gitaar, tot een zachte halftrage sequence het na een paar minuten overneemt. De Duitse school moe? Ik ook niet en dit is er een andere variant op. Dit is een juiste manier om iets te starten. Het gaat over in "Anima-Machina", met verre primitieve fluiten, meer lijkend op Robert Rich dan op Gerber en zijn gezelschap. Twinkelende belletjes komen en gaan, met extra veel galm voor een mooi effect. Een gitaar komt centraal in de mix en een stevige sequence start. De intensiteit hiervan vermindert wanneer er een luide orgelklank bijkomt. Deze eerste 2 tracks zijn erg goed en duren ongeveer 11 minuten.

"Fragile" is een kort zacht keerpunt, mooi geplaatst. Melancholische strings, misschien zelfs cello's, klinken heerlijk. "Tunnel" zou niet misstaan op de CD "M'Ocean" van Michael Stearns. De pulserende kwaliteit heeft ook wat weg van Phillip Glass. De woordloze vocalen van Diane Timmons benadrukken het juiste gevoel hier. De synths beginnen te dwarrelen en te draaien naar het einde toe, en dit op een zeer goede manier. "House of Gaudi" is dramatische orgel muziek, een heel sterk stuk. Ik hou ook van "Blue Planet Blue", met zijn fretless bas en een soort harmonica, of tenminste de synthesizer equivalenten. Dit klinkt wel wat bluesachtig, vanuit een met rook gevulde nachtclub - leuk.
