Dream Furious
Here we go again with five slices of ambient trance from the eminently cool Cursor Club label. 'DR 08 (The Glistening)' starts with a discordant air which morphs superbly into slow yet purposeful melodic phrasing. Scratching, shuffling rhythms start to emerge then the track gets fully into its stride. It's the classic formula of juxtaposing an edgy, stark rhythm against sumptuous, relaxing pads and again it works a treat. The relatively modest 6 minute length of this piece does keep the agenda moving along, though for me it could have lasted longer so allowing for even more developmental interplay. Even so, a joy.

'DR 12 (The Glistening II)' warps proceedings to the industrial revolution. The rhythmic lattice sounds like a steam driven hammer, and again the pads provide the symphonic counterpoint. Enter bass line and the piece settles down for an extended "chug out". The next piece is 'DR 09 (Remix of Fiblini's Tango)'. Fiblini is another artist on the CC label, and to date it's the only Cursor Club CD which hasn't really grabbed me, but I must give it another go because this sounds not too bad at all. Completely different to the other pieces on this CD, it's a more classical approach with stabby bell type voicings and whimsical main theme.

Back to business with 'DR 11' which opens with eastern feel ambience before the rhythm breaks through. Again it has a shuffling feel to it but the whole piece glides along on breathy pads. Finally 'DR 10 (Pandora's Pastoral)' which opens ominously and proceeds into a spaced out interlude with slowly undulating atmospherics.

Another pleasing release on the CC label, nothing outrageously brilliant, but it does ooze an understated confidence which will win many fans. (GG)
