Dream Journeys
‘Dream Journeys’ seems to have come out about the same time as ‘Spirit Keepers’ and in some ways acts like a cross between that album and his ‘Planetary Chronicles’ material. On the opener for example, like ‘Keepers’, the same haunting flute is used and at times the underlying sonic fabric could have come straight from that album. At others times, however, especially on the longer tracks the cosmic atmospheres of the ‘Chronicles’ albums come much more to mind. The second track for instance could be from that series if it wasn’t for the use of some subtle percussion and acoustic guitar.

The next, nineteen minute piece, is my favourite on the album. The atmospheres would have sounded very cosmic if it wasn’t for the extremely faint sound of waves breaking on the shore. The flute sound is also used in a way that conjures up images of being out in space. Some people might think of the music here as ambient but if so it is of the lighter variety creating positive images rather than dark despair. Moving on to the rather melodic track four, the flute and percussive effects are very uplifting without being intrusive, very pleasant. Even when the flute dies away the positive vibes are still there. At around ten minutes the gentle rhythm completely changes and different images are created but no less satisfying than before. The last track carries on in a similar mood.

If you liked ‘Spirit Keepers’ buy this album. If you were just getting round to buying it and haven’t yet I would suggest getting this one first. The only irritating thing about the CD is all the New Age crap on the back sleeve. Just ignore it. (DL)
