Robert Schroeder
D.MO Vol 1
|
This CD contains original unreleased recordings which chart Robert Schroeder’s very earliest excursions into EM. Most of the music was recorded
between 1978 and 1982, mainly using self-built equipment. The sleeve points out that the material is “non remastered” - doubtless to retain the
spirit and feel of the original recordings. It does mean though that recording quality is definitely not one of this album’s strengths.
The collection opens with ‘The Roots of Spirit’, at 12:42 the longest piece and quite possibly the best. It is
based around a surprisingly cohesive sequence and the synth refrains move purposefully through the piece. As
the album proceeds however it is more obvious that what we have here is an opportunity to hear Robert
Schroeder finding his feet. Consequently, much is rudimentary and some pieces should have been left gathering
dust. One for completists perhaps but even novelty value is limited here. (GG)
