I believe this is a re-release, I'm also told that the original album was a big seller hence we're probably in "by popular demand" territory. There's no date indicated but I'd guess it was mid 90's ish when this first saw the light of day, and on initial auditions its easy to see why it was popular. It's the sort of music for which the term "EM/ambient crossover" was coined. If you like the endless pulsations of the likes of Banco de Gaia or even Spyra in his more thoughtful moments then the majority of this album is for you. Just to quantify the "ambient" tag, it's in the "ambient chill" zone so it's the type of thing you'd be presented with after a few hours of high energy stomping, perfect to unwind with appropriate visual accompaniment - amoebas splitting etc.
The 4 tracks are 'School of Fish' (18.26), 'Hymn' (28.09), 'Fishology' (9.25) and 'Under Water' (15.18). 'Hymn' is notable for some excellent sequencing, filtered in the classic EM style, and like many before it bearing more than a passing resemblance to the backbone sequence of Duran Duran's 'Save a Prayer'. Unlike the rhythmic openers, the final 2 pieces are atmospheric weirdness, probably a conscious effort to carefully pace the wind-down process.
Definitely cool to the touch, no doubt cutting edge when first released, a touch passé now perhaps - a bit like laminate flooring really. But still a "good 'un". (GG)
