This is a digital remaster of Dave Wright's very first album - released on cassette only. A heavy rhythmic loop and sequence combine together to provide a storming start to the first track 'Don't Look Back'. In complete contrast the melodic lead lines are rather delicate. The contrast in rhythm and sound is highlighted still further when another crashing drum is added. Its the sort of track that is a long way from what Dave Wright fans might expect and is a little clumsy in places.

'Romance' as the title might suggest is a much more delicate track with a lovely echoing plucked string melody over orchestral pads. Especially when the harmonica sound is added it reminded me of backing music to a Western where the hero is slowly riding into the sunset. Not an obvious image for EM but shows that Dave Wright was 10 years ahead of Steve Roach and his 'Dust to Dust' CD! On to the third number 'January 1989' (wonder when this one was recorded?) a piece featuring piano and strings. It sounds a little disjointed to these ears but that is probably just me. 'Song for 'Tricia' uses a pan pipe lead over a chugging rhythm and wind blown pads. 'Abintra (A Love Song)' is suitably romantic. Its has a real lazy Sunny Sunday afternoon feeling to it.

Both this and the previous track are pleasant enough, sounding a little like G.E.N.E. though not quite as polished. Unsurprisingly 'Seashores' begins with the sound of breaking waves, a guitar being played over the top, string pads adding colour. It is the longest number here at over seventeen minutes, it maintains the opening formula right until the end and is supremely relaxing. The waves continue trough the short title track which finishes the album off. Its a gorgeous romantic number for synth guitar and strings- beautiful.

The sound quality on this re-issue is OK but the production leaves something to be desired. It does show how far Dave has come in that department over the years but is nevertheless an interesting insight to where it all began and does have some worthy moments, especially the second and last tracks. Well worth big Dave Wright fans checking out but not the place to start if you aren't already into his work- that would have to be 'Live at London Planetarium'. (DL)

Dit is een digitale heruitgave van David zijn allereerste album, indertijd enkel op cassette uitgebracht. Een hevige ritme/sequence combinatie start de eerste track "Don't look back". In tegenstelling tot het vorige is de sololijn vrij delicaat. Dit contrast wordt nog versterkt door de toevoeging van verpletterende drums. Deze track is ver verwijderd van wat David Wright fans verwachten, soms zelfs een beetje plomp.

"Romance" is een meer delicate track met een mooie geplukte strings en orkestrale begeleiding. Wanneer de harmonica komt opzetten deed het me denken aan de achtergrondmuziek van een western waarin je de held traagjes ziet wegrijden naar de zonsondergang. Geen voorbeeld van EM maar het laat wel zien dat David 10 jaar vooruit was op Steve Roach met zijn "Dust to Dust". Op naar het volgende nummer "January 1989" (wanneer zou dit opgenomen zijn?), een stuk met piano en strings. Voor mij klinkt dit een beetje ontwricht. "Sorry for Tricia" maakt gebruik van een panfluit, een ronkend ritme en winderige achtergronden.

"Abintra (a love song)" is vrij romantisch, dit geeft zo'n echt lui zondagnamiddag gevoel. Deze en vorige tracks zijn erg prettig en klinken een beetje zoals G.E.N.E., alhoewel minder gepolijst. "Seashore" begint met (hoe kan het ook anders) het geluid van..........vul zelf maar in, bijgestaan door een gitaar en strings. Dit is ook het langste nummer, zo'n 17 minuten, het behoudt de openingsformule tot aan het einde en is vrij relaxerend. Een erg mooi nummer.

De geluidskwaliteit van deze heruitgave is ok maar de productie laat wat te wensen over. Het laat zien hoe ver David gekomen is na al die jaren, en is niettemin interessant om te horen hoe het allemaal begon, speciaal track 2 en de laatste track zijn erg goed.
