I have never met Lyle as he lives in the States and as far as I know has never travelled to England but he has been sending me tapes for some time, the best tracks from which are showcased here.
Many styles are covered from the melodic to dark soundscapes and even others that will appeal to those into space music. 'Moon Over Elmora', 'One Step at a Time', 'The Search', 'On the Run', 'Among the Missing', 'Close Encounter' and '70 Miles' are slow rhythmic tracks with a rather haunting and uneasy feel but each with a distinct character of its own.
'Into the Realm of the Unknown', 'Desperate Hours', 'Separation', 'Eternal States' and 'Reflection' are spacey affairs with some nice touches and again, as with most of the tracks on the album, there is that something strange lurking. I suppose this is what makes this album work for me; there is that odd quality that makes it sound different.
'Initial Contact' uses a rather floating backdrop with eastern lead line over the top. 'New Horizon' and 'Distant Starlight' are a couple of the happier tracks on the album with perfectly fitting subdued melodies but again deep down you realise there is more to be heard than meets the ear.
The final track 'Respite' is a lovely way to finish the album, it is the shortest track on the CD but just goes to show that music can portray feelings without going on and on or becoming too complex. (DL)
