Matt Borghi Elegy for Time

Matt first came to my attention though his collaboration with Cyber Zen Sound Engine on their 'The Intercepted Transmissions' CD. This album is somewhat different however. Even though 'The First Rays of This Forever's Light' might be a rather pretentious track title it does explain the sound quite well. What we get is a carpet of bright, seemingly never ending, shimmers. They could very well be describing light twinkling off the water or even a heat haze.

There is subtle little melodic detail from time to time like slightly stronger rays rising out of the background brightness but there are no startling dynamics, it's all supremely relaxing in a very floating sort of way. Actually as all the tracks have a similar sound and feel to them it is pointless going through them one by one but there are some subtle differences. 'Wonder-Filled illusion' for instance despite its title seemed to have something of a darker edge to it as did 'Together, We Are', Mortality Descending' and 'Nearly Settled'; most of the middle of the album in fact. Then there's 'You are, My Friend' which seemed to have a spiritual almost vocal quality.

I am extremely un-technical when it comes to how Electronic Music is produced but it was with some astonishment that I read from the sleeve notes that the source instrument was solo acoustic guitar with minimal treatments and no overdubs. To me it sounded nothing like an acoustic guitar. I can hardly imagine anything more electric sounding. This music actually reminded me of an LP I listened to over a decade ago (actually could be closer to two decades) by an artist called Laraaji. If memory serves he used some sort of processed electric Zither. Both techniques provide a very similar shimmering sonic curtain. (DL)

Matt kwam voor het eerst onder mijn aandacht door zijn samenwerking met Cyber Zen Sound Engine op hun 'The Intercepted Transmisions' CD. Dit album is op een bepaalde manier anders. Alhoewel "The First Rays of This Forever's Light " misschien een vrij pretentieuze titeltrack is, verklaart het de titel wel degelijk. Wat we hier hebben is een tapijtje van heldere, altijd variërende schaduwen. Ze kunnen het best omschreven worden als licht dat weerspiegeld wordt op het water of zelfs als een hittegolf.

Er is af en toe een subtiele melodieuze bedrijvigheid alsof er sommige stralen meer uit de achtergrond tevoorschijn komen, maar nooit met echt veel dynamiek. Het is erg relaxerend op een zwevende manier. Eigenlijk hebben alle tracks eenzelfde soort gevoel en is het dus nutteloos ze één voor één te beschrijven, toch zijn er subtiele verschillen. "Wonder-Filled Illusion" bijvoorbeeld, heeft desondanks zijn titel een donker kantje over zich, alsook "Together, We Are", Mortality Descending" en Nearly Settled", eigenlijk het volledige middengedeelte van de CD. Dan is er ook nog "You Are, My Friend" hetwelk een spirituele, bijna vocale sfeer heeft.
