Justin Boundy
Emospheres
A selection of 8 tracks composed, arranged, produced and performed by Australian musician Justin Boundy. Written and recorded between Jan 1994 and June 1995, the album takes you on "a journey through a world of varying emotional spheres". 'Opening the Emospheres' is a measured piece of modern EM which airs a flowing melody set against pin sharp electronic percussives. 'Orbital Journey' rides on a contemporary electronic dance beat which, if speeded up and supplemented by a "block rockin' beat" sample, wouldn't be out of place in chart territory. The gentle melody however clarifies that the approach is definitely laid back. 'Wind Spirits' is a grandiose orchestral / choir synth outing with religious overtones, while Jean Michel Jarre fans will instantly recognise the 'Equinox' touches on the opening to 'Cyberdance'. A heavy beat is developed with some Jarre-ish choirs and enjoyable electronics to produce a very strong outing. 'The Transition' is a decent ambient interlude, and 'Renascence' (don't know if the spelling is deliberate!) dusts off the ivories and presents floral piano aplenty. 'Reunion (Orbital journey)' is another well presented chugger—in effect an even more laid back version of track 2— leaving 'The Last Sphere' to close with lush symphonics which are again tackled with some expertise. With the plethora of EM albums available in this sort of style it's easy to be sensitized to music like this. OK it doesn't exactly scale the peaks of EM achievement, but remember this is a debut release and Justin Boundy has produced an album of pleasing, varied, and in many places polished Electronic Music. For this he deserves credit, and on the form of tracks such as 'Orbital Journey' and 'Cyberdance' there may well be a bright future ahead. (GG)
