Bil Vermette
Emocean
OK, we’ll give Bil Vermette the benefit of the doubt and assume this is pronounced “E.M. Ocean”. The more I hear the opener ‘Cascades’ the more I like it. An uptempo sequence is accompanied superbly by psychedelic guitar. ‘The Chosen’ shows the other side of Bil Vermette’s work, being a powerful yet reflective piece featuring choral voices and more electric guitar - and again very impressive. ‘Aurora Australis’ is a strange track because it sounds oriental to me! ‘Dreams Awake’ is the longest piece at just under 11 mins; an atmospheric affair consisting of delicate effects and rudimentary themes and this style is very much carried on by ‘Antarctic Ice’. Powerful sequences jostle with raucous electric guitar on ‘Dark Passage’ making it sound very TD-ish. The bulk of this album will appeal to those looking for atmospherics and ambience rather than melody and uptempo rhythms. One or two tracks shouldn’t have left the boundaries of the studio, but largely the music has presence and substance which many will find to their liking. (GG)
