It is only recently that I discovered 'The Circular Ruins' and yet in that short period of time they have become one of my favourite 'ambient' acts. All the tracks here have very long titles so my apologies to all concerned that I have shortened them for the purpose of this review. We begin the title track with a mass of circulating bleeps. It's like being in a slowed down modem! We soon settle to some nice melodic tones and a rhythmic loop however. It's rather laid back but also intriguing.

'Over the Fields of Light…' has a much more organic feel with the sound of water, insects and birds. We then get what could be looped wind chimes as if blown by a gentle breeze before a rhythm starts up, a bit like a train but as if heard from a great distance. The overall effect is rather dreamy, as with the next number 'Recollections….'. Bright metallic drones become laden with white noise and things take a slightly sinister turn. Mournful dark drones cut through a bubbly backing. The mood and tapestry of sounds is ever changing, we even get some distorted guitar. It's an enjoyable and attention holding track.

'The Interpretation of Dreams…' uses a melodic sequence / loop as its backbone. I found my head nodding in time to it though the carefully placed sounds here and there are just as satisfying. Temptation to over clutter is resisted so the brain is caressed rather than assaulted with too much information. The lead lines weave in and out of the mind though they are so subtle that you hardly even realize they are there unless you listen for them such is their perfect fit to the whole. In the fifth minute the loop departs and is replaced by a nice chugging groove. This is the most syncopated moment on the album so far. It is not overdone however and rises and falls through the mix wonderfully. Loved the brief return of the sequence right at the end as well. A quiet staccato rhythm nestles deeply in the middle of the mix on 'Salient Features…' making it's full impact in the second minute as it becomes more complex and echoing. Tranquil pads return and become the main feature shortly after but the rhythm keeps coming back to tease us then departs amongst a sea of cosmic bleeps and twitters. With three minutes to go the mood becomes even softer and tranquil with the sound of running water and pleasant bright drones.

'Eccentric Souvenirs…' has a rather humid swamp feel. Synthesised insect noises and warm pads provide ample ingredients to conjure up pictures in the mind. Curious vocal samples can just be heard occasionally but they don't intrude, just give a rather dreamy feel. 'A Little Different….' had an equally warm feel to its predecessor but this time it made me think more of deserts. We get the sonic equivalent to a heat haze with just a little detail here and there as if a beetle or scorpion is scampering across the sand. Again very subtle use is made of vocal samples which give a sort of intrigue without intruding at all on what is the most truly 'ambient' track on the CD.

'The Seven Sisters…' continues in just as tranquil a state but it isn't long before a faint melodic loop can be heard. It's all extremely pleasant building slowly as further melodic detail is added. A gorgeous way to finish yet another triumph from The Circular Ruins. (DL)

Het is nog niet zo lang geleden dat ik 'The Circular Ruins' voor het eerst hoorde en toch zijn ze in deze korte periode één van mijn favoriete ambient artiesten geworden. Alle tracks hebben een erg lange titel dus vergeef me dat ik ze hier wat ingekort heb. We beginnen de titeltrack met een massa circulerende bliepjes, alsof we ons in een vertraagde modem bevinden! Spoedig nestelen we ons tussen een mooie melodie en een ritmische loop. Prettig om naar te luisteren en tevens intrigerend. "Over the Fields of Light…" heeft een meer organisch gevoel met zijn klanken van water, insecten en vogels. Dan krijgen we iets als geloopte windgongen, zachtjes aangeblazen door een zachte wind, alvorens er een ritme start, een beetje als een trein maar dan gehoord van een verre afstand. Het effect is eerder vrij dromerig, alsook het volgend nummer "Recollections…".

Heldere metaalklinkende drones worden geladen met witte ruis en het krijgt hier een sinister tintje. Hierbij komen nog sombere donkere drones. De stemming en het klankentapijt zijn altijd in beweging, we horen zelfs vervormde gitaar. Het is een aangenaam nummer dat de aandacht er in houdt. "The Interpretation of Dreams…" gebruikt een melodische sequence/ loop als ruggengraat. Mijn hoofd knikte mee op de maat en ook de klanken vond ik erg bevredigend. Mijn brein reageerde hier ongelooflijk gunstig op. De solo's zweven door je geest, doch zijn zo subtiel dat je ze amper opmerkt, zo perfect passen ze in het geheel. In de vijfde minuut verdwijnt de loop en wordt hij vervangen door een ronkende groove. Dit is het meest syncopatische moment van de CD – tot nu toe. Het is beheerst alhoewel er erg veel beweging in de mix zit. Ik hield wel van de korte terugkomst van de sequence op het einde. Een staccato ritme nestelt zich diep in het midden van de mix in "Salient Features…" en komt complexer en echoënd naar boven in de tweede minuut. Zachte paden keren weer en worden spoedig de hoofdmoot, het ritme blijft echter bekoren tot het verdwijnt in een zee van kosmische bliepjes en twitters. Met nog drie minuten te gaan wordt de sfeer nog zachter – we horen nu zacht stromend water en zachte heldere tapijtjes.
