Over the next few magazines we will be reviewing releases by a new label called Sandpiper Records. They concentrate on the quality of music they release, yet keep the cost down (current retail price £7.95) by making the packaging distinctly basic- just a plastic wallet and a printed insert. Some of the discs just have a catalogue number printed on the CD but this one does at least have some nice on body artwork.

'Reflecting Sphere' begins with shimmering drones and bubbling effects. It's as if the wind is blowing across an alien landscape, gasses rising through a primordial soup. A cool rhythm suddenly starts up that wouldn't have been out of place on one of the more accessible releases on the DiN or FAX labels. A new slower beat gets underway on 'Bond in Union'. It is accompanied by little melodic touches including spot on tuneful pads. As with most of this album there is great attention to detail which puts it above the vast majority of releases which could be banded in the more rhythmic end of modern ambient music. This album reaches right for the soul but excites the body at the same time.

'Three Worlds' if anything is even better. Flutey pads, dark shimmers and plucked strings combine gorgeously together- pure bliss! 'Rind' chugs along nicely, little wordless samples which are only just heard float over the top like ghostly figures. 'Mosaic II' initially takes us back to the other worldly landscape of the opener before an infectious groove starts up, it's a real body mover without being too strident. Again the melodies are subtle and combine with the rhythms stunningly. 'Another World II' is by far the longest track at over fifteen minutes. A rather cosmic affair it is too but also deeply relaxing and meditative. 'Mobius' is also laid back with more excellent flute sound but also some very effective echoing note droplets that focus the attention. On repeated plays however it is what is going on in the background which I found fascinating. 'Belvedere' returns us to rhythmic territory combining both conventional drum sounds with 'squelchy' type effects. 'Encounter' is just as syncopated using a fascinating array of loops and rhythms but without forgetting to add that all important melodic quality.

'Day & Night' brings back the flute and slows down the rhythm though it is just as captivating in the looping department. There is a nice deep bass line in there too. Another highlight of the album; I just wish it had been longer and developed more. There was so much potential there. 'Liberation' is an excellent foot tapping chugger; not too thunderous, just right in the context of the album and a nice way to finish. There is the occasional 'odd' moment here however such as 'Sky & Water 1' but maybe I just didn't get it. On the whole this is a very welcome album by Carl. He was one of the early pioneers of the UK synth scene, especially when he released 'Call for World Saviours' in the early 80's but like Ron Berry, just seemed to disappear. He did surface again a few years ago with his Rheged project which was a little too 'experimental' and intense for the typical SMD customer but here he has come up with something that should appeal to our growing fan base of modern ambient music as favoured by the labels already mentioned above and Databloem so I expect the future prospects for him to be very bright indeed. Gedurende een aantal magazines zullen we uitgaven bespreken van een nieuw label, nl. Sandpiper Records. Ze concentreren zich op kwaliteitsmuziek met een laag prijskaartje (ong. 12 Euro) en dit doen ze door de verpakking erg basis te houden, maw. enkel een uitgeprint velletje papier en een plastiek hoesje. Sommige cd's hebben enkel de vermelding erop van een catalogusnummer maar deze is mooi bedrukt. "Reflecting Sphere" begint met schemerige drones en bubbelende effecten.

Het is alsof de wind over een buitenaards landschap raast en gassen ontsnappen uit een soort van oersoep. Plots start er een 'cool' ritme dat niet zou misstaan hebben op een meer toegankelijke uitgave van het DIN- of Fax-label. Een andere trage beat brengt "Bond in Union" op gang. Dit wordt bijgestaan door wat melodietjes en erg toonvolle tapijtjes. Zoals met de meeste tracks hier is er veel oog voor detail en dat plaatst het boven het gemiddelde van de uitgaven, betreffende de meer ritmische en moderne ambient. Dit album mikt op je ziel maar bereikt je lichaam op hetzelfde moment. "Three Worlds" is zelfs nog beter. Fluitklanken, donkere schemeringen en geplukte strings – een gelukzalige combinatie! "Rind" loopt lekker aan en woordloze sampels, net hoorbaar, zweven boven het stuk als schimmen. "Mosaic II" neemt ons aanvankelijk mee terug naar het landschap van de openingstrack vooraleer een aantrekkelijk ritme er de beuk in zet. De melodieën zijn weer subtiel en in combinatie met het ritme werkt dit erg goed. "Another World II" is de langste track met meer dan vijftien minuten. Het is een vrij kosmische aangelegenheid maar werkt tegelijkertijd ook relaxerend en meditatief. "Mobius is ook vrij rustig met een uitstekende fluitklank en erg effectieve echoënde noten die alle aandacht trekken. Wat er zich hier op de achtergrond afspeelt vind ik echt fascinerend. "Belvedere" komt terug op het ritmisch territorium met een combinatie van conventionele drumklanken en kosmische percussie.

"Encounter" is erg syncopatisch met zijn combinatie van loops en ritmes, zonder te vergeten dat de melodie erg belangrijk is. "Day & Night" brengt ons weer de fluit en doet het ritme dalen, toch is dit erg aantrekkelijk op ritmisch gebied – luister vooral ook naar de diepe baslijn. Dit is ook een hoogtepunt van het album, toch wou ik dat dit langer uitgewerkt was, er was zoveel potentieel. Bij "Liberation" kan je niet blijven stilzitten, het is niet te fel en past perfect in de context van deze cd – een mooie manier om te eindigen. Een gek moment hoewel is "Sky & Water I", maar misschien begreep ik het niet helemaal. Over het algemeen is dit een erg goed album van Carl. Hij was één van de vroegste pioniers van de UK EM- scène en oogstte vooral succes na het verschijnen van zijn 'Call for World Saviours'.
