Various Artists
A Future Age of Music
This Various Artists sampler serves as an introduction to the music available on the AMP Records Label, and as such features the like of Tangerine Dream, Richard Pinhas, Paul Nagle, Mark Jenkins and even Keith Emerson. TD completists will probably want this CD simply for the 'Short Walk Edit' of 'Catwalk'. I'm afraid I'm too out of touch with TD's latest works to tell you how this differs from the album version—it may simply be faded early—however I do remember that 'Catwalk' was by far the highlight of 'Tyranny of Beauty' (before I sent it back) and it sounds no less impressive here. Mark Jenkins' contributions include the excellent 'Harlequin' which was the stand out cut from his otherwise disappointing 'Space Dreams' album as well as the tuneful-but-slightly-plodding 'Alpine Sunrise' from 'Thunder at Midnight'. Richard Pinhas' 'Moira' from 'Cyborg Sally' is an impressively powerful and rhythmic outing while Paul Nagle's 'Firedancer' is a typically polished piece of uptempo EM. Keith Emerson's quirky 'Christmas Album' is represented by 'Snowman's Land' however 'The Church' from 'Changing States' is much more like the KE we know and love with a "raw two fisted assault" on his Hammond B3. Other tracks of note include 'Light Mover/The Source' by White Noise and all in all this is an interesting and enjoyable compilation which is certainly worthy of investigation. (GG)
