Les Jumeaux
Feathercut
Les Jumeaux (the twins) is a side project of Klive & Nigel Humberstone (AKA In The Nursery) and though ITN's lush elements of orchestration and Gothic poignancy are present, this is much more a 90's fashioned album. For anyone who bought the recent Les Jumeaux's 'Cobalt' this earlier release is in the same vein, yet does not try to touch-down at every EM base. Opening with the title track, it's a piece of solid driving EM which would sit happily on TD's '220 Volts' album. 'Carroussella' follows, with its sub-dub industrial stance coupled with treated vocals and an early Talk Talk percussive groove. 'Empty Drama' uses a refrain from ITN's 'Calgari' soundtrack, blended with more dub & orchestration, yet still managing to sound electronic? 'Comliance' probably refers to the flute refrain's 'uncompliance', as it flits in and out of a highly percussive, manic piece. Next up is a slice of pure class - `Cyflo'. Another `Calgari' refrain but given a vitamin injection of solid, emotive EM - it's at times like this you feel homegrown artists sit at the pinnacle of the electronic mountain... The album carries on in this vein, chunky, "dubby" basslines, dark orchestration, the occasional female vocals and that up-to-the-minute electronic groove. A "class"-ic album from the Humberstone twins whose artistry and production gains new strengths at each release. For anyone into latter-day Tangerine Dream, coupled with the current percussive stance, and that twist of Gothic darkness - buy without reservation. (Stuart J. Harris)
