Fonya
Earth Shaper
This is an album which could be easily underestimated. Fonya (Chris Fournier) is known for his prog based compositions, and what he has produced here is another album crammed with instrumental delights which could have been gathered from a few dozen Genesis or Yes albums. The spine tingling opening of 'Salad Daze' holds a mesmeric melody which Paul Ward would be proud of, before drums and minimoog soloing bring to mind Tony Banks in fine form. It's difficult not to draw comparisons because the style is so derivative, but not in any negative way. Fonya is obviously a class act and the it shows in the music. Lots of fluctuating tempos are on display, and the way the music ebbs then swells in anthemic fashion reminds me especially of Steve Hackett on releases such as 'Voyage of the Acolyte'. EM fans with a leaning towards the progressive should definitely try this out. I've got a feeling it's a real grower. (GG)
