Free System Projekt & Brendan Pollard & Hashtronaut Mind out of Time Play: Mid-Fi Hi-Fi (Excerpt from track 'The Upper Chamber') Please go to the Store to buy this item. |
This is the follow up to the similarly titled ‘Time out of Mind’. Windy effects and deep reverberating drone conjour up a rather apocalyptic sound. Brighter tones shine through the gloom, mixing beautifully with flutey synth. This is no mere intro to ‘Shadows and Fog’ though, it is a vital, wonderfully ‘felt’, piece of music in its own right. I could have wallowed in the gently shifting atmospherics all day but when the sequence does arrive it is powerful enough to give me a shake and focus the mind. Guitar adds fizzing energy to proceedings. ‘The Upper Chamber’ uses cosmic twitters and what sounds like a bowed deep bass string. Sequences gradually start to emerge, complete the classic combination, lush mellotron. Sure, this is all very Tangerine Dream inspired (as much so in the exquisite atmospheric sections as the sequences) but if you love your 70s Berlin School music it really doesn’t get much better than this. An absolutely fantastic track. ‘Option C (slight return)’ is, I presume, the follow on to ‘Option C’ from the earlier album. As with that track the sequence is excellent, combining with the tron and lead lines perfectly. I also love the chilled out mellotron and chimes section near the end. If anything this is an even better album than ‘Time out of Mind’, both in production and content. That is not to say the opening album in the series wasn’t good, it was, but this is something a bit special. DL
