For me, Arcane's debut album 'Gather Darkness' was striking for the magnificence of the opening track, with infectious melodics and sequencing to match Schmoelling and Franke at their best. If the TD ''Logos' era was for you, then it's a "must buy" album on the strength of that track alone. All subsequent tracks on '...Darkness' charted an earlier period, the pounding sequences sounding sensational but I craved for more of that magical infectious music. On 'Future Wreck' my prayers have been answered, with 3 of the 4 tracks delivering exactly that. That's not to play down the opening title track which charts more mid 70's territory with gripping sequencer runs sandwiching a delicious middle section where mellotron timbres flourish. The second sequence run especially is a corker with drum lines rampant in an orgy of electronic rhythmics, all topped of with searing synth lines from the very top drawer. Yes, it is a sensational opener which would be the high point of most EM albums worth their salt. But, for me, what transcends Arcane to almost unbelievable heights is spelled out in tracks 2, 3 and 4.

To start with 'The Plastic Eaters' does not sound overtly different in style to the opener, with brooding mellotron flute over a throbbing, resonating backdrop. Then the main sequence lines start to build and things start to escalate very quickly. Where shall I start? The melody? It's gripping, sumptuous, scintillating and above all infectious. The sequencing? It's completely magical. A mixture of low bass lines and high register detail which has me lost for words. Then the drums kick in. Wow! At 6:50 the track soothes its grip and subtly familiar elements infuse through the music. 'Livemiles Part 2' (closing section) was always one of my favourite TD pieces, and here the chord progressions and voicings bring the spirit of that piece flooding back. It is, quite simply, sensational. At 10:30 the track resumes it's own magnificent agenda, as an ominous air takes over and the track gradually fades to close.

Track 3 'The Visible Empty Man' opens with eerie tones which bring to mind the opening credits of the original Alien film. The track gradually builds, as stabbing punctuations around the 4 min mark start to set the scene for the glories to come. The mellotron trumpet vox cuts a swathe with a delicious riff, then syncopating sequences have your eyes widening in delight. Can this brilliance continue? At 7:45 the sequencing gets into a groove and the synth riffs really go to work. It's unbelievable that this isn't Schmoelling, such is the quality, and when the chord changes hit home to inject even more melodicism it's time for me to stop typing and just sit back and listen................ I'm back, and it's still the same track. I'll just mention the fantastic end section, a melancholic delight to match anything I've heard in a long time.

Track 4 'Planet of the Blind' will have sequencer fans jumping for joy. Everything is right, with rattling half note patterns breaking through at the 6:30 mark accompanied by more delicious thematic progressions. Special mention also for the fantastic sleeve design, great fun and very cleverly put together.

You can't sum this album up in a single sentence, read the whole review to get the merest glimpse of how fantastic it is. I'll simply say that, in my book, EM just doesn't get any better than this. The whole album just left me with a huge smile on my face. (GG:-)

Nederlandstalige versie

Voor mij scoorde het eerste album van Arcane, "Gather Darkness", enkel al door de mooie openingstrack, met zijn aanstekelijke melodieën en sequences, vergelijkbaar met Schmoelling en Franke op hun best. Als het TD-logos tijdperk iets voor jou was, is het dit wat je graag hoort, enkel al voor de eerste track. Ik verlangde dus naar meer van dat en mijn gebeden werden verhoord met "Future Wreck", vooral tracks 3 en 4.

De openingstrack daarentegen is niet minder mis, meer mid 70's, met aangrijpende sequences en een middenstuk met mellotronklanken. Zeker de tweede sequens is een voltreffer met drums temidden van een orgie aan elektronische klanken, afgewerkt met een synthsolo van de bovenste plank. Een geweldige openingstrack die het hoogtepunt zou kunnen zijn op veel andere EM-albums. Maar wat voor mij Arcane tot op grote hoogte verheft, hoor je in tracks 3 en 4.

"Plastic Eater" klinkt niet zo anders dan de eerste track, met mellotronfluiten over een kloppende resonerende achtergrond. De basissequence begint zich op te bouwen en de track escaleert snel. Waar begin ik? De melodie? Deze grijpt je aan, weelderig, schitterend, vooral mooi. De sequence? Complete magie. Een mix van lage baslijnen en hoge tonen die me naar mijn woorden doet zoeken. Dan komen de drums erbij - wauw! Rond de 7 minuten wordt het wat rustiger en komen er verfijnde elementen bij. "Livemiles part 2" (eindstuk) was altijd één van mijn favoriete TD-stukken, dit stuk geeft mij ongeveer hetzelfde gevoel. Het is sensationeel. Rond de 10.30 minuten wordt alles nog eens samengevat om dan langzaam te eindigen.

Track 3 "The visible empty man" opent met enge klanken, doet me een beetje denken aan het begin van de eerste Alien film. De track bouwt zich trapsgewijs op, rond de 4 minuten een stempel zettend van wat gaat komen. Vervoering met mellotrontrompetten en syncoperende sequences. Kan dit blijven duren? Rond 7.45 minuten begint alles echt te werken. Is dit echt Schmoelling niet? Wat een kwaliteit! Ik kan dit nu niet verder bespreken, ik moet er eerst naar luisteren. Ok, ik ben terug, nog steeds dezelfde track. Het enige wat ik nog wil vermelden is dat dit me een melancholisch gevoel geeft dat ik sinds lang niet meer gekend heb.
