Vir Unis is one of my very favourite 'ambient' musicians. His music tends to conjure up the most vivid images and holds my attention much more than most of the host of composers currently producing this style of music.

'An Opening Occurs' certainly begins moody and sparse. Carefully chosen sounds are left to hang in the air then slowly disappear. I suppose to some it would sound cosmic but rather than looking outward to me it felt more like being in a dream, the mind exploring itself entering regions of the brain that would not be possible during the normal hectic routine of the day. As we float into 'Approaching the portal', strange nature type sounds can be heard and a restrained but still full of attitude rhythm starts up building tension as it continues. We then go through a darkly chaotic transient section as if the mind is again searching, opening new doors of the subconscious eventually becoming more tranquil as we move towards 'Finding the Center'. It begins as a floater but by the third minute a slow shuffling rhythm starts up low in the mix. Close on its heels a haunting flutey synth lead line enters. The beat becomes more insistent rising through the relaxing pads.

Cyber tribal rhythms catch hold of the body making it difficult to keep still. Its beautiful but exciting at the same time. This really is an awesome track. In the latter stages the body is stilled with more beautiful tranquil pads. The atmosphere darkens a little as we flow into 'Transient Light'. The drones become thicker and somewhat more menacing / haunting. Some water noises that could only just be sensed on the previous track now become slightly more prominent. This is no refreshing stream however, more like a bubbling cauldron. From these noises a tapping sequence emerges which develops into another quite complex cyber tribal type rhythm. More wonderful thick beats enter in the tenth minute and again I just had to let myself be lost in the wonderful groove.

The soul is calmed again as we are taken into the next track 'Passage'. Its all rather 'breezy'. When some lovely gentle symphonic pads are added it made me think very much of a wind swept moor-land on the edge of a village. Its wild and somewhat desolate but also dramatic and beautiful at the same time. A splashing rhythmic loop starts up and its as if we are crossing roads on our journey to the city. 'Return' is another very relaxing number. Faint vocal chatter can just be heard under gentle tones and sighing pads. The audience is calmed but I would imagine delighted by a wonderful performance. I wish I had been there. Vir Unis at his very best. (DL)

Vir Unis is één van mijn geliefde 'ambient' muzikanten. Zijn muziek roept bij mij allerlei beelden op en houdt mijn aandacht langer vast dan die van de meeste componisten in een gelijkaardige stijl. "An Opening Occurs" begint stemming en schaars. Voorzichtig gekozen klanken blijven hangen in de atmosfeer om dan langzaam te verdwijnen. Voor sommigen zal dit vrij kosmisch klinken, ik voelde me echter als in een droom, mijn geest verkende zichzelf en ontdekte gebieden die tijdens de normale bezigheden van de dag niet toegankelijk zijn. Als we verder drijven naar "Approaching the Portal", horen we vreemde natuurgeluiden en een ingehouden, maar de aandacht trekkend ritme, bouwt stilletjes de spanning op. Dan komen we in een donker chaotisch stuk, alsof de geest terug gaat zoeken en nieuwe deuren opent van het onderbewuste.

Het wordt terug kalmer als "Finding the Center" dichterbij komt. Dit begint als een drijvend stuk maar tijdens de derde minuut start er een traag schuifelend ritme laag in de mix. Kort daarop volgt er een huilende fluitachtige synthsolo. De beat komt kalmpjes opzetten door de relaxerende golven heen. Het cyber tribal ritme maakt het me moeilijk mijn lichaam stil te houden – mooi en opwindend tegelijk. Deze track is echt verschrikkelijk goed. In een later stadium komen hier nog erg mooie zachte tapijtjes bij. De atmosfeer wordt terug wat donkerder als we verdergaan met "Transcient Light". Het klanktapijt wordt dikker en wat meer bedreigend. Watergeluiden, die op de vorige track al net gehoord werden, komen nu meer op de voorgrond – geen verfrissend stroompje echter, meer een bubbelende ketel. Hieruit wordt een sequence geboren die zich verder ontwikkelt tot weer een cyber tribal ritme. Rond de tiende minuut komen er nog meer zware beats bij en moest ik me totaal laten gaan op deze wondermooie groove.
