‘Endless Plains’ is a rather rock tinged piece with piano and electric guitar providing the melody. It is very ”in yer face” and has a powerful driving rhythm that would make it a great tune to start an all-action Hollywood movie. ‘Incident In Desolation Canyon’ begins in suitably eerie mode but then we get a very lush melody with guitar in the background - very nice but didn’t have any where near the impact of the first track. ‘Mystique’ hangs around a superb bass sequence with some fast and frantic lead lines played over the top. As the track progresses it gets more and more intense, the guitar is much more restrained than on the opener but provides some wonderful colour later on. Superb stuff, I would love to hear it played live. ‘Return To Katha’ initially conjures up images of the sun rising over a forest. A slow rhythm is introduced then a beautifully delicate melody is formed on the guitar and a synth lead line is placed over the top. This is a lovely track providing good contrast to ‘Mystique’. After a series of synth textures ‘Lunarphase’ really starts to get going with a strong lead line, chugging guitar and some excellent drums. The sixth track ‘Tronscape' makes use of another sequence but it isn’t as strong as on ‘Mystique’. ‘Galileo’s Fate' takes us into deep space floating away on the edge of some galaxy and is far better than most cosmic music I hear. As for the last track ‘L’Etouille Rouge’, sorry didn’t like it. It sounded like a theme tune to Trumpton or something, but never mind. On the whole, a very good album. (DL)
