At last a CD with Zero Ohms on it that I can actually say something positive about. Up till now I have just found everything by them boring or even irritating typifying the gulf between certain of the more 'serious' practitioners of Ambient music and the 'down to Earth' (in more than one meaning of the phrase) sensibilities of the typical SMD audience. Yet apparently one of the titles I had already dismissed was the number one best seller for Space For Music during 2002. Another victory for blandness I reckon but anyway on to the review of this CD.

What we have here is effectively the musical equivalent of a painting. The musicians create a picture in the mind using sound. Very vivid pictures they are too. Certain ambient music conjures up as many different images as there are people who listen to it. I would imagine here though that the images will be fairly similar for nearly everyone, even without the help of the titles. On 'Flows Drift' we get a collage of sounds and effects which are like being in a harbour at night. The sound of water lapping against a harbour wall is combined with bells and boats drifting on their moorings. There are also delicate drones adding just a bit of peaceful colour here and there. 'On a Cosmic Sea' uses fairly similar backing with the addition of gentle flute. Some strange hissing sounds (water spray?) and then sort of growling effects are added nearer the end. I wondered if a storm was brewing but all becomes tranquil again as we finish. The title track features bell tones. A drum can be heard from time to time, punctuating the tranquillity rather than providing a rhythm. The flute is again deployed, more strident than on the previous number, reminding me a little of American Indians.

'On Currents of Sound' begins with a shimmering undulating drone and flute combination. As with the rest of the album it's very peaceful, just sit back and relax. 'Into the Nth' has a rather windy beginning. Ethereal pads and deep drones are added creating for me the most satisfying track on the album. The combination of sounds chosen are exquisite. 'In the Next Future' takes a more ominous turn. A gong is struck fading into the distance over some rather dark backing. Things remain rather quiet but still deep and rumbling till just before the end when the pads become lighter and rather windy again. (DL)

Uiteindelijk een CD met Zero Ohms waarover ik iets positiefs kan zeggen. Tot hiertoe vond ik alles van hen vrij saai en zelfs irriterend, de variatie typerend tussen de meer 'serieuze' beoefenaars van de Ambient en de 'laag bij de grondse' (in meer dan één betekenis) gevoeligheden van het typische SMD publiek. Een titel die ik gemist had was de best verkopende CD van Space For Music gedurende 2002. Tijd om de CD te bespreken nu. Wat we hier hebben is de muzikale weerspiegeling van een schilderij. De muzikanten creëren een schilderij in hun hoofd maar gebruiken hun klanken. Dit levert heel levendige beelden op. Ambient muziek heeft zoveel gezichten als er mensen zijn die er naar luisteren. Ik kan me echter wel voorstellen dat iedereen hierbij dezelfde beelden zal krijgen, zelfs zonder hulp van de titels.

Op "Flows Drift" krijgen we een collage van klanken en effecten alsof we ons in haven bevinden tijdens de nacht. Het geluid van water slaat tegen de kademuur en wordt gecombineerd met klokken en boten die liggen te dobberen. Hier en daar zorgen wat zachte drones voor een gevoel van rust. "On a Cosmic Sea" gebruikt een gelijkaardige achtergrond, alsook een zachte fluitklank. Enkele vreemde klanken (spuitend water?) en een soort van grommende klanken worden later ook nog toegevoegd. Ik dacht even dat er een storm op komst was maar alles wordt weer rustiger tegen het einde. De titeltrack gebruikt belklanken. Soms worden er wat drums gehoord, eerder om de rust te accentueren dan om voor ritme te zorgen. De fluit komt er terug bij en deze keer deed ze me denken aan Amerikaanse Indianen.
