Christoph Biesenbach
Inner Events
|
Brand new release on the Ardema label by this very interesting young German synth musician. This is Christoph's CD debut, his influences are said to range from Brian Eno to Vangelis. One influence obviously present is that of German synth band Motionmania, one track is actually called 'Dedicated to Motionmania' and certainly captures their style of sequencer music. In fact most of the 10 tracks are sequencer-dominated with only subtle but effective lead synth lines. 'Last Race' and 'Inner Events' are good examples, both evolve into spellbinding sequential music and sound like a mixture of Rainbow Serpent and Motionmania (both also on Ardema, this label seems to specialize in this brand of E.M.).
'Good Luck' is my favourite piece, it's similar in style to Ron Boots' music, having that laid-back feeling but with plenty of nifty sequences to keep it alive. Some lovely melodies creep in later. The longest track 'Half a Year' varies considerably throughout its 12 minute length. Intricate sequences form the backing to all sorts of delightful melody lines. There's a slightly darker feel to 'Impressions', this being the most atmospheric piece. It's far from boring though with plenty in the mix to keep you interested. Like most of the tracks it's quite involved and should be played several times before it can be fully appreciated. The final track 'Epilogue' is a short, slow piece having the most beautiful chords. A slow sequencer melody joins and before you know it it's all over. A nice finish to the album but I wish this track was a bit longer.
So a very good debut CD and one which should appeal to a wide range of E.M. fans, having a good balance between the melodic, sequential and atmospheric styles. (Trevor Newman)
