'Mars Infers' begins with shimmering metallic drones punctuated by a low repeated two note motif. Its an extremely atmospheric but ominous start. Some faint ticking sounds can be heard in the background as nice thick warbling pads rise to the surface. The music seeps its way into your mind, half caressing it half leading it to those realms inhabit by the hearts and minds of the musicians. Vocal samples can just be heard but they only really provide very faint detail taking us to the end. A slow piano melody is left to float in the air, each note slowly decaying into the distance as 'Whispering Across Oceans' sets a lighter mood than the opener. It's more melodic but also subtle.

We float into 'Echo Location and Lost Loves' on the back of windy pads and dripping effects. A gentle mechanical sounding rhythm can be heard low in the mix combining with more warbling pads and another lovely understated melody. The feeling now is of melancholy though beautiful with a tender caring edge. 'In Almost Any Language' again makes use of a delicate piano melody placed over ethereal drones. The structure is very simple and its this simplicity along with the exquisite combination of sounds which so successfully creates a feeling of profound sadness. 'He Called me Butterfly' sounds as if its going to be as soppy as hell but instead turns into the most syncopated track so far. Quirky rhythms combine with a very effective lead melody. This isn't in ye face stuff- that just isn't Matt and CZSE's style but even so I felt my body going with the flow of the music and my mind being enticed this way and that by a number of really good lead sounds. Superb track.

We then get a series of three short numbers. 'The Hill Over Nagasaki Harbor' being the first and shortest at around two minutes. Its very atmospheric with strange crackling sounds in the background- a little like listening to a worn out record. The second 'Consider This' uses shuffling rhythms and more shimmering pads with waves of sound breaking one after another from the speakers. The way the rhythm keeps being obscured by these waves is like trying to look at objects through a mist. The rhythm however becomes more strident (within the contexts of the album) on the third shorty 'Passing Us Unaware'. You could even say it gets into something of a groove. Sounds of an approaching aircraft become more dominant as the rhythm subsides. 'Endless Rain' has the inevitable rain / storm samples to begin with but when combined with some perfectly chosen looped noises and stroked pad sounds you get an extremely effective piece of picture music. A really nice melody low in the mix is made even more effective when a sparse three note piano lead line is added to it. 'Code Breaking' again uses the piano sound but this time initially as an eight-note sequence to which more piano detail is added.

'Mend' returns to rhythmic groove, you could even say restrained dance territory! No worries though, this is no thudding bass extravaganza. Melodically its another beautiful triumph and when combined with the rhythm it has a rather euphoric feel to it. 'And Yet I float' is pretty much self-explanatory finishing the CD off in nice relaxed fashion. CZSE are hard to categorize as they serve up a rather unique mix. Spot on ambient atmospherics rub shoulders with excellent melodies and the occasional rhythmic section breaks things up and keeps the interest. The addition of Matt Borghi on the album has been a real plus making this CD even better then the first. (DL)

"Mars Infers" begint met glinsterende metaalklanken, geaccentueerd door een 2-noot motiefje. Een zeer atmosferisch maar onheilspellend stuk, met ook nog tikkende klanken op de achtergrond en dikke golven die af en toe op de voorgrond komen. De muziek sijpelt door in je geest, deze half leidend/ half dragend naar een gebied wat bewoond wordt door de harten en de geesten van muzikanten. Ook enkele stemsamples weerklinken zeer zwak en leiden ons naar het einde. Een pianomelodie blijft hangen in de lucht, elke noot sterft uit in de oneindigheid om dan over te gaan naar "Whispering across Oceans", een veel lichter nummer. Ook melodischer maar heel subtiel. We zweven binnen in "Echo Location and Lost Loves", op de rug van winderige paden en druipende effecten. Een zacht metaalklinkend ritme weerklinkt laag in de mix, vergezeld van wervelende klanken en een lieflijke melodie. Het gevoel is wat triest, maar mooi met een gevoelige beklemtoning.

"In about any Language" maakt weer gebruik van een pianomelodie en etherische klanken. De structuur is heel simpel maar door zijn eenvoudige, succesvolle combinatie van klanken creëert dit een gevoel van diepzinnige droefheid. "He called me Butterfly" is heel syncopatisch, met eigenzinnige ritmes en een heel doeltreffende solo. Dit is niet zo'n voor de hand liggende track, niet echt typische CZSE of Matt stijl, dit nummer laat je lichaam gaan en je geest in verlokking komen enkel door een koppel goede soloklanken. Geweldig nummer.

Dan krijgen we een reeks van 3 korte nummers. "The Hill over Nagasaki Harbor" is de eerste en kortste met zijn 2 minuten. Heel atmosferisch met krakende klanken op de achtergrond, zoals bij een versleten LP. De tweede "Consider this" gebruikt ritme en duistere klanken die één voor één tevoorschijn komen. Op de manier dat het ritme steeds weer wordt versluierd door de golven, lijkt het soms net of je iets bekijkt door een dikke mist. Het ritme krijgt de bovenhand in het 3e nummertje "Passing us Unaware". Het wordt zelfs bijna een groove. Het geluid van een naderend luchtvaartuig komt op de voorgrond als het ritme vervaagd.

"Endless Rain" begint met ……….storm/regen samples gecombineerd met perfect gekozen loopjes en pads, zeer beeldende muziek. Nog meer effectief is de solo die er laag in de mix bijkomt, alsook de 3-noten pianomelodie. "Code Breaking" gebruikt weer de pianoklank maar ditmaal als een 8- notensequence waar dan steeds meer details aan toegevoegd worden. "Mend" keert terug naar de ritmiek, bijna dance territorium! Geen paniek echter, de bassen blijven beperkt! Melodisch is dit echter zeer mooi en tezamen met het ritme geeft dit een beetje een euforisch gevoel. "And yet I float" is een zichzelf verklarende afsluiter van de cd, in alle rust dus. CZSE is moeilijk te categoriseren, zij bieden een complete mix van stijlen aan met de nadruk op atmosferisch, met mooie melodieën en soms wat ritme, wat de aandacht scherp houdt.
