Soft pads sighing over gentle rain provide a melancholy setting to explosions heard in the far distance. Ethereal wordless vocal tones add a faintly spiritual quality to this stunning opening section. A slow wistful melody hangs in the air and fades into the horizon, tinkling little note droplets taking over from the rain. Music does not come any more beautiful than this. Suddenly it is all change as metallic shimmers; percussive detail and splashes of sound give a much sparser feel. It all fits together to create the most wonderful shifting textures with a subtle though indistinct melody. A restrained bass line imparts a little structure before subsiding in another wave of blissed out angelic pads. Sampled nighttime street sounds form a backdrop to repeated tuneful loops creating a lovely dreamy atmosphere. Night turns to day however and the pace quickens slightly. Lead lines and a tinkling, constantly mutating, sequence give added energy though, over all, subtlety still prevails over power. A slow rhythm enters which got my head nodding gently to it, little melodies weaving around the beats. Very gradually things become more intense as a sinister melodic loop becomes the main focus. Suddenly we return to dark brooding realms full of strange effects. A bright silken tone floats above it all like a ray of light shining through the gloom but this is of the more questing searchlight variety rather than providing any comforting warmth. Piano note droplets then lead line soon return us to a comforting safe place however. This is wonderfully done- quite sublime. Pads swell as we surge forward on a wave of positive energy, the most wonderful melodies floating through the air from every level of the music, creating a euphoric triumphant conclusion to yet another superb album from one of the most talented artists and musicians I stock through SMD.
As a bonus we get a DVD single. It is on the theme of nuclear war. The images, archive film clips and above all music are crafted together to create a rather chilling experience. This is an additional composition to anything on the CD, not just a section of music taken from it with pictures added. It starts with what could be the sound of plane engines, the pictures being of a nuclear test and the people taking part in it. The melodies are simple but stunningly beautiful with an almost carefree innocence which is in complete contrast to the images we are watching, which become more poignant and disturbing as we progress.
