This fictitious band is really Paul Nagle. Those who know his work will recognise some of his melodic style but rhythmically much of the rhythm is more in yer face. Both band name and album title make a little bit more sense when you look at the artwork - as amongst some really excellent images you will find cannabis leaves and a spliff! Don't worry though you don't have to be stoned to enjoy the album. Contrary to what you might think 'Tribal High' doesn't contain what I would think of as tribal beats but it certainly has rhythm aplenty, some of it incredibly bass heavy (but not of the dance variety). The lead line blasts along at quite a pace and its all extremely exciting stuff. It got my whole body moving and hands playing air keyboard like a crazy thing. What an incredible opening number.

'Ed Wood' slows the pace slightly, the steady beat and rather trance inducing melodic sequence mixing wonderfully together - and it's all so cool. It gets into an extremely pleasant groove with an excellent bass line, growling effects mixing well with the delicate sequence. We never stay still however as one infectious beat or melodic lead effortlessly flows to the next. Incredible- the second track is even better than the first! 'Best Before End' begins with a rather curious 'melodic' loop with a quirky vocal quality to it. A bass line rumbles underneath and a rapid rhythm bounces over the top. Things calm down a little but soon another roller-coaster drum line comes in then a rapid 'squelchy' sequence takes things forward.

Angels, Pins & Nipple Clamps' (!) lives up to its title in that it's as subtle as a brick with a touch of humour. The rhythm is very heavy with ample bass. A curious little warbling vocal type sample bubbles in and out of the mix. The stand out element from the track is a wonderful lead line and melodic loop which enter in the second minute. These are joined a minute later by massed euphoric pads. It's incredibly beautiful and astonishingly works very well in such a heavy rhythmic setting- beauty and an earthquake side by side. 'Dimensional Distortion' initially combines a 'tinkling' sequence with piano. The piano melody develops, alternating with another string lead line over yet more cool infectious grooves. The 'oh yes!' factor increases as the track goes on, the beat and lead lines getting under your skin. It really has to be heard to be fully appreciated but it's another sure-fire winner!

'Totally Fine' has more repeated strange vocal effects at the beginning but these are soon replaced by a swirling sequence and a heavy beat. As with a previous track though the lead lines and melodic elements are in complete contrast to the beat, being delicate and actually very 'tuneful'. Again this juxtaposition of disparate elements works extremely well. The howl of a wolf and slow rhythm get '(The Look) In Your Eyes' underway. Very soon a much faster sequence takes things forward. There is a slight melancholy to proceedings. Another beat increases the pace a little then in comes one of the most exquisite melodic loops, lead line / rhythm combination you will ever hear - completely stunning and devastating stuff! This track is inspired, the finest moment of an album which already has so many. In my books this must surely be one of the best tracks Paul has ever composed.

We finish with the title track, and a very unexpected twist it is too being totally devoid of rhythm and ominous sounding. There are some rather nice touches of guitar almost weeping from the speakers which pull at the heartstrings. Having such a number to finish is a masterstroke. It took me back a little but just left me thinking wow! Of course Paul can't be serious for too long - just listen to the last few seconds - good grief! (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Deze fictieve band is eigenlijk niemand minder dan Paul Nagle. Zij die zijn werk kennen zullen zijn melodische stijl herkennen, enkel het ritme is wat steviger. De naam van de band en de titel van de cd komen tot hun recht als je het hoesje bekijkt – tussen een aantal erg mooie tekeningen zie je een cannabisblad en een jointje. Geen angst, je hoeft niet stoned te zijn om van dit album te genieten. Tegengesteld aan wat je zou kunnen denken bevat "Tribal High" niet echt tribal ritmes, alhoewel er genoeg ritme in zit en een erg diepe bas, maar niet van het dance-type. De solo raast voort tegen een ongelooflijke snelheid, ongelooflijk goed. Mijn hele lichaam kwam in beweging en ik speelde luchtkeyboard als een waanzinnige, een geweldig openingsnummer.

"Ed Wood" is iets langzamer, ook met een stevige beat en een vrij trancey sequence, heel mooi samen. Dit evolueert verder naar een prettige groove met een uitstekende baslijn, effecten en een gevoelige sequence. We staan nooit stil, van de éné sequence en melodielijn gaan we over in de volgende. Ongelooflijk – het tweede nummer is nog beter dan het eerste! "Best Before End" begint met een vrij rare melodische loop met een vreemde vocale eigenschap. Een baslijn rommelt onderaan en bovenaan hebben we een ritme. Het wordt iets rustiger tot er een erg snelle drum bijkomt, alsook een snelle verpletterende sequence.

"Angels, Pins & Nipple Clamps" (!) is een nummer met een vleugje humor. Het ritme is erg stevig en heeft een ruime bas. Vreemde vocalen zweven in en uit de mix. Eigenlijk draait het allemaal rond de uitstekende solo en de melodielijn die er in de tweede minuut bijkomt. Iets later komt er ook nog een euforisch tapijtje bij. Dit is heel erg mooi en werkt verbazingwekkend goed bij het stevige ritme – schoonheid en aardbeving gaan hand in hand. "Dimensional Distortion" combineert een twinkelende sequence met piano. De pianomelodie wordt uitgewerkt en wisselt af met een stringsolo, later nog aangevuld door aanstekelijke ritmes. De factor 'Oh ja!' wordt sterker naarmate het nummer verder gaat, de drums en de solo kruipen onder je huid. Dit moet echt beluisterd worden, een echte winnaar. "Totally Fine" heeft weer vreemde geloopte stemmen die al spoedig vervangen worden door een draaiende sequence en een stevige beat.
