Overall this album has a pseudo classical feel but it does diverge from this style dramatically from time to time. On 'Expandere' these classical leanings mix with Eastern even Turkish melodies played on both winds and guitar. We have sawing strings, gently plucked acoustic guitar and oriental instruments combining to give a rather cinematic sound. In the ninth minute some tabla type rhythm is added but in keeping with the rest of the track it is subtle rather than driving.

I suspect that the sound sources are nearly all electronic but it could just as easily be completely unplugged such is the sound palette used. It's very well done but a million miles away from the trance leanings of 'Zanzi' and 'Omni'. On 'Axioum' it sounds as if we have a massed orchestra. Vast sawing strings combine with a wind section and even church organ. Again this would be perfect film music. We even have a solo piano section. Initially it's more of the same for 'Ermite' but it isn't too long before we get our first electronic sound on the whole album- a sort of twangy loop. Strings are still present with high register synthetic percussion over the top. It does become slightly tedious however even though it is the shortest number at four minutes.

Immediately a rapid sequence pulsates from the speakers at the beginning of 'Euclidean', soft string pads in the background. I was quite optimistic that the album was changing direction and I suppose it was (momentarily) but my hopes were dashed after a couple of minutes as we veer off again, this time to cool jazz territory complete with lazy sax line! This then disappears and we get more soft pads (strings again). After some silence we launch into what is effectively an uncredited part two which seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the earlier part of the track!

An excellent mean bass groove starts up combining with cool little electronic touches that wouldn't have been out of place on a DiN album. But then we get a break for more sweet strings (ahhh!) before returning to that fantastic groove again, even better than before taking us to the finish. 'Cislunar' has an acoustic guitar beginning, a bass line being added to it. It bounces along developing into a sort of jig! It then slows down to a pleasant plodder, acoustic guitar still taking the main lead duties. As the track moves on I thought it went from being pleasant to muzak, but that could just be me.

The final track 'Eros' was by far my favourite on the CD. It starts with dark effects then soft synth string pads. An excellent sequence starts up. It mutates into a very mid to late seventies sounding Tangerine Dream one, mixing surprisingly well with the stabbing strings and drum flourishes around it. Not sure about the return to Eastern realms in the ninth minute though - cramming just a bit too much in maybe. Why Steve called the CD 'Space' I have no idea. Cosmic this ain't. If you like your music with classical leanings and also unexpected interludes into contrasting styles however this might be for you. Just how many such people are on SMD's database I will find out by how well it sells. (DL)

Over het algemeen heeft dit album een pseudo-klassiek gevoel, maar het wijkt van tijd tot tijd soms sterk af van deze stijl. Op "Expandere" mengt het klassieke zich met Oosterse en zelfs Turkse melodieën, gespeeld op fluit en gitaar. We hebben ook strings, zachte geplukte akoestische gitaar en oosterse instrumenten, die allen samen een vrij cinematografisch geheel vormen. Rond de negende minuut komt er een tabla ritme bij, niet overheersend echter, het vormt een geheel met de rest van de track. Ik veronderstel dat de klanken volledig elektronisch zijn, toch zouden ze evengoed volledig 'unplugged' kunnen zijn, zo klinkt het gebruikte klankpallet. Dit is allemaal erg goed gedaan maar kilometers verwijderd van het trancy gevoel op 'Zanzi' en 'Omni'.

Op "Axioum" klinkt het zelfs als een heus orkest. Stevige strings worden gecombineerd met een windsectie en zelfs kerkorgel. Dit zou weer perfect in een film passen. We krijgen dan zelfs een pianostukje. "Ermite" is meer van hetzelfde tot we overgaan naar de eerste elektronische klanken op het album - een soort van vreemde loop. De strings zijn nog steeds aanwezig met daarboven op een hoge synthetische percussieve loop. Het wordt vrij vervelend alhoewel het het kortste nummer van de CD is, amper vier minuten. Een snelle sequence komt uit de luidsprekers van bij het begin van "Euclidian" , zachte strings worden op de achtergrond gehoord. Ik was vrij optimistisch dat het album een andere wending kreeg, mijn hoop viel echter snel in elkaar toen we een vrij jazzy stuk te horen kregen, compleet met sax lijn! Dan krijgen we terug zachte tapijtjes. Na een stilte begint een onvermeld 'part 2', wat absoluut niets te maken heeft met het vorige stuk! Een uitstekend 'gemene' baslijn start en wordt gecombineerd met elektronische klanken welke zo van een DIN album zouden kunnen komen. Dan een korte pauze voor nog meer strings (ahhhh!) en verder terug naar de groove, zelfs nog beter dan daarvoor. "Cislunar" vangt aan met akoestische gitaar en verder een baslijn, dit kabbelt lekker verder. Dan vertraagt het en wordt de gitaar het hoofdbestanddeel. Als het nummer verder ging had ik het gevoel of het overging van prettig naar muzak, maar dat kan enkel mijn gevoel zijn. De laatste track "Eros" is mijn favoriet van deze CD. Deze begint met sterke effecten en zachte strings tapijten, gevolgd door een uitstekende sequence.
