Jeff Pearce
Bleed

CD / 13 tracks / 51.57 mins

Jeff continues his penchant for coaxing haunting melodies and textures from his ambient guitar. In contrast to The Light Beyond, which played almost as a single piece of music, this features 13 distinct tracks, all between 2 ½ and 5 minutes in length. Also, The Light Beyond was so ambient as to melt away preconceptions of what a guitar should sound like.

Here, though it retains Pearce's sense of dreamy reverie, plucked notes are easily discernible throughout. His sensitivity comes through on titles like "Through Tears," "In Weaker Moments," and "Melancholia." Though I tend to gravitate toward Jeff's more ethereal style, this disc really allows his artistry and his ability to shine. That is to say, this disc proves he can play extremely well, and doesn't need to rely on studio gimmickry as a means to an end. The atmospherics are used to enhance the guitar, but the guitar takes center stage on almost every track. In fact, only "Closure in the Rain" and "Abandoned Playgrounds" come across as purely ambient. The former is a blend of light and dark textures, but the latter is quite haunting. Both are gems in an array of more ambient soundscapes from Pearce. (PD, originally appeared in 'Electroambient Space')
