Bernd Kistenmacher
Compiled Dreams
Billed as a short overview of Bernd’s musical work during the past 10 years, I was slightly suspicious when the sleevenotes pronounced that this is more than just a so called “compilation” - because basically, as the title suggests, that’s exactly what it is. However, Bernd Kistenmacher is not the type of artist who fobs you off with any old bits and pieces. This is carefully selected series of live, remixed and unreleased tracks which come together as a quality package. The 18 minute opener ‘Heartbeat’ is a sublime cruise on gentle sequences, and ‘Lost in Thoughts’ (from the 1989 KLEM CD) is a delightful synthesised cameo with shuffling beat and strong themes. The next 2 tracks present around 20 minutes of spaced out effects, while the final pairing present more relatively restrained sequencing however they maintain interest throughout with subtle changes of detail and emphasis. Overall this delivers the goods in an unfussy and controlled manner. (GG)
