As you might expect of an album representing all those evil things that lurk in the watery depths around the world, this is very dark stuff. 'Gods of the Bent Sea' is a mix of rather unusual rhythms over half heard vocal effects. Next up we have the very short 'Fish Eyed Daemon' which acts as a more accessible bridge to 'Cyclopean Silo' which conjures up some strange alien structure hidden at the bottom of a deep ocean. 'Engine of Typhon' takes us further into the structure and we hear an alien chanting faintly in some strange language. These half heard vocal utterances really are something of an Endura trademark and they use them to great effect in creating rather uneasy atmospheres. The track ends with a muffled explosion.
'Nan Ma Dol' uses the sound of wind blown pipes of various pitches, again the overall effect is rather spooky, not the sort of track I would like to listen to with the lights out. 'Abysmal Deeps' describes itself quite well! I can just imagine some subterranean devastated city complete with the dull sound of a bell ringing as it is disturbed by the currents and accompanied by the wailing of long drowned souls. In fact they have probably come straight from the next track 'Island of the Dead'. You can hear the tomb doors being opened and ominous footsteps taking the dead down to the sea, as you can see this is just the sort of track to liven up any party. 'Dragon is my Weapon' consists of a theme started in the previous track overlaid with the same chants as heard in 'Engine of Typhon'. 'Earthscope' is like travelling around a series of caverns with the sound of some strange machinery being heard from time to time. In the last track 'Cthulhu Fhtagn' you can just imagine something rather repulsive slithering along the bottom of a polluted lake and it finishes the album in perfect fashion. Press the repeat button and refill your flagon with mermaids blood. (DL)
