Beatboys 2000 Little Place

Beatboys 2000 are Hardy Kukuk and M. Culmey. OK I don't particularly like the band's name but it is rather apt because upbeat rhythmic music is certainly what you get. Each track even has a bpm figure after it. If you are interested they range between 100 and 140. The first track 'Rise Up' is great fun and certainly packs a punch. The lovely thick sequence and even lead lines reminded me of something off Tim Blake's 'Crystal Machine' album. The rhythm however is much more up to date combining perfectly with the wonderful pulsations. If this had been released in 76 or 77 they could well have had a hit single on their hands!

We move into 'Headlight Glare' on the back of an even faster sequence with high hat accompaniment. This is much more 'Trance' like however with a dance beat being tossed in at the four minute mark. Its now ideal for a rather trippy light show becoming more energetic all the time. Its another highly enjoyable number that can't fail to get the body moving. As we transcend into the third track 'Camera Obscura' the dance beat got even heavier, cosmic touches being placed over the top. 'Electronic Barque' takes us away from anything remotely 70s having both feet placed firmly in Trance / Dance territory (of the more interesting variety) with good attention to the sounds picked and very nice looped (for want of a better term) lead detail. 'Full Steam' gives us more of the same but its even faster. 'Flushing' begins with a collage of swirling notes. A steady beat starts up. Its quite chilled compared to what has gone before but even so gets into a pleasing groove. Just when my mind was starting to wander and wanting a little more variety they duly obliged, fading to near silence the rhythm is stripped down and altered as the sequences slowly rebuild. Even so a few minutes could have been shaved off the end I think.

'Felsentempel' puts the foot down on the accelerator again, the sequences and rhythms increasing in pace but the main focus to me was a delightful little melodic loop. The charmingly titled 'Sewage Works' has a jaunty sequence which bubbles away over a bum ching type rhythm then a lovely squelchy lead line plays over the top. 'Azure' seamlessly caries on, the sounds becoming even thicker, the overall feel being well out their 'man'. 'Navigator' deploys a slow bass beat and lovely little lead melody which weaves around it. Indeed this is the most 'tuneful' track on the album reminding me a little of Asana. Its the sort of thing that would accompany motor sports where the action is fast and furious. Exciting and accessible stuff. 'Polydimension' deploys all sorts of swirling effects around another deep steady beat. 'Spectral Space' is somewhat back to more traditional Electronic Music realms, certainly in the sequence department which chugs along very nicely. The melodies are also very pleasant and wouldn't have been out of place on 'Drive II' by Rainer Bloss.

The tempo is upped for the two short closers, 'Hatching' and 'Climbing', both being firmly back to dance / trance territory. On the former more squelchy loops and leads fizz over a no nonsense beat. On the latter the rhythms are even thicker as we finish with something of a blast. Individually most of the tracks work well but personally I found over an hour of mainly dance / trance music a tad heavy going. If you are into this style though I would certainly investigate as it is extremely well done. The first track however was right up my street and I imagine would be liked by almost everybody. (DL)

Beatboys 2000 zijn Hardy Kukuk en M. Culmey. Ok, ik hou niet zo van de naam van de band maar het verwijst wel degelijk naar het uptempo ritme dat je krijgt. Elke track heeft zelfs een Bpm getal achter de titel, allen tussen de 100 en de 140. De eerste track "Rise Up" is puur krachtig plezier. De mooie dikke sequence en zelfs de solo herinnerde mij aan iets van Tim Blake 's 'Crystal Machine'. Het ritme daarentegen is erg van deze tijd, perfect gecombineerd met wondermooie pulsen. Als dit moest uitgekomen zijn in '76 of '77 zat er misschien wel een dikke hit in!

We gaan verder met "Headlight Glare" met een nog snellere sequence met hihat begeleiding. Dit is wat meer 'Trance' maar na vier minuten komt er een dance beat bij. Dit is ideaal voor een energieke lightshow. Een erg aangenaam nummer dat er in slaagt je lichaam te doen bewegen. Als we afdalen naar de derde track "Camera Obscura" wordt de dance beat nog heviger, met er bovenop kosmische effecten. "Electronic Barque" brengt ons naar het Trance/dance territorium (de meer interessantere vorm) met een goede keuze aan klanken en een mooie geloopte solo. "Full Steam" ligt in dezelfde lijn maar dan nog sneller. "Flushing" begint met een collage van dwarrelende noten gevolgd door een stevige beat. Dit is vrij kil in vergelijk met het vorige maar bevat toch een lekkere groove. Op het moment dat ik naar wat afwisseling begon te vragen, werd mijn wens ingewilligd. Het volume gaat naar beneden en het ritme wordt afgebouwd en verandert op het moment dat de sequence terug wordt opgebouwd.

Toch mocht voor mij dit stuk wat korter zijn. "Felsentempel" is weer een vlotter stuk, sequences en ritmes lopen weer sneller maar voor mij ligt de focus toch op de aangename melodische loop. Het charmant getitelde "Savage Works" heeft een kwieke sequence die verder bubbelt over een boem-tching ritme met daarover nog eens een mooie, tot zwijgend brengende, sequence. "Azure" zet dit verder, de klanker worden dikker. "Navigator" gebruikt een trage bas beat en weeft er een mooie melodielijn rond. Dit is de meest 'muzikale' track van de CD en herinnerde mij wat aan Asana. Zeer opwindend en toegankelijk. "Polydimension" gebruikt alle soorten van dwarrelende effecten rond een stevige diepe beat. "Spectral Space" ligt wat meer op het gewone EM domein, zeker op sequencer vlak. Ook de melodie is erg prettig en zou niet misstaan hebben op 'Drive II' van Rainer Bloss.
