Cosmic drones and windy effects sooth the senses as 'Pauanne D Minor' gets underway. Shimmering metallic tones and watery effects take over. This really is very pleasant stuff. Little note droplets form into a slow exquisite melodic sequence over ethereal pads. A second sequence compliments the first. The pace quickens as the sequences develop but what we have hear is no ball breaker instead it is one of the most beautiful tracks I have ever heard from the band. Soft soothing flutey synth, further syncopation and more wonderful lead lines do give a little extra oomph (indeed fresh sequences seem to materialise right until the end) but without denting the serene mood. Quite stunning. 'Kaiku pt 3' is a shortish track which takes us back to the cosmos. There is quite a bit going on in this sector of space however and much of it is rather eerie and edgy though intriguing at the same time. A rapid quirky sequence and driving rhythm change the mood completely for 'Io-Io'. It is an infectious body mover. A superb bass line comes in that, if driving, would get the foot down on the accelerator causing you to hurtle along far too fast and yet above it all is a contrasting almost sighing lead that calms the nerves as we flash past all around us. The pace increases still further and the leads take on a more aggressive 'live solo' type character. Best just pull over and let yourself go completely ape! There is a short 'Announcement' (in Finish?), before a deep didgeridoo sound introduces 'Hivalla'. Splashing rhythms take the track forward. Gentle echoing strummed guitar adds interest then becomes more strident, developing into a lead solo. Quite an amazing combination of sounds! 'Raggaeniac' is a more conventional number as a lovely sequence and high hat combination form the base over which gentle melodies shift this way and that. A real groove is developed, and as with 'Io-Io' it is best just to let yourself go with the flow. There are some real nice solos nearer the end that give it an almost tripped out feel (man!). Stormy effects get 'Shaman Drum' underway. When it arrives the 'Drum' was not what I was expecting, being more like slow timpani. The storm subsides to be replaced by shimmering pads and percussive effects. Gentle guitar (or similar) strums add a little detail. A very curious but fascinating track. 'Pauanne F Minor' has a rather different sounding start to the similarly titled opener. Indeed has very little in common at all throughout. This time things are more Earthbound with another storm, then gentle rain but with some impressive electronic effects superimposed over the top that give proceedings a darker feel. The first sequence materialises relatively quickly creating a soothing but also rather mysterious sounding base around which a slow delicate rhythm and wonderful little effects weave. A second bass sequence develops then fades back lower in the mix. Subtle leads create a rather moody magic of their own. Things aren't out and out in your face but there is still a real 'attitude'. Flute lead then mellotron add that extra feel of mystery. A superb way to finish a very enjoyable album. (DL)
