If my calculations are correct this is Ian's sixth library disc (including 'Sci-Tech'). Just to re-cap, a library disc is designed for the world of TV, Commercials and Film. The music is written to fit in with certain moods so that it can be taken 'off the shelf' by producers to accompany their images. Often the tracks are rather short, as is the case here, ranging from 1.22 to just over 3 minutes.

It is an extremely pleasant listen as an album in its own right though it is occasionally frustrating for a track to finish when it has served its purpose rather than develop. On this disc Ian depicts different elements of the natural world. As such various moods are covered such as the beautiful and joyous opener 'Sunrise'. A faint sequence can just be heard amongst soft melodic drones, euphoric symphonic pads swelling as a new day bursts into life. Even more gentle are 'Atoll' and 'Ecology' slow rhythms mixing with lovely laid back melodies- summer holiday music. Other numbers are much more dramatic. With 'Eruption' for instance you can just imagine rocks being hurled into the air as the sinister lava flow destroys all in its path.

Then in complete contrast we get extremely tranquil numbers like 'Arctic' , 'Windswept', 'Expanse' and 'Arid' where little melodic touches hang above soft drones, each element perfectly describing the subject matter. A similar pattern is used but to much different effect on tracks like 'Force of Nature', Deep', 'Desolate' and 'Endangered'. Here tranquillity is the last thing in mind. Instead images of just how powerful, menacing or even 'eerie' nature can be are expertly described. There are even exciting body movers such as 'Active', 'Stormchaser' and 'Earthbeat' which will take you along with their infectious grooves. So its a mixed bag but each track fits its title perfectly. Expect to hear frequently whilst watching TV. (DL)

Als ik goed kan tellen is dit de zesde library disc van Ian Boddy (inclusief 'Sci-Tech'). Om nog even te herhalen, een library disc is eigenlijk bestemd voor de TV-, reklame- en filmwereld. De muziek wordt geschreven om binnen een bepaalde stemming te passen zodat deze door allerlei producers kan gebruikt worden om hun beelden te ondersteunen. Meestal zijn de tracks vrij kort, zoals hier dus, variërend tussen 1.22 en 3 minuten. Het is prettig luisteren als een op zichzelf staand album, maar soms toch een beetje frustrerend wanneer een track eindigt als zijn doel bereikt is, in plaats van zich verder te ontwikkelen. Op deze schijf beeldt Ian verschillende verschijnselen uit, afkomstig uit de natuurwereld. Zodoende worden verschillende stemmingen aangesproken zoals op de mooie vrolijke openingstrack "Sunrise". Een verre sequence wordt net gehoord tezamen met zachte melodische drones, en euforische symfonische klanken zwellen aan als het ontwaken van een nieuwe dag. Nog mooier zijn "Atoll" en Ecology" met hun trage ritmes, gemengd met prettige 'echte' vakantie muziek. Andere nummers zijn dan weer meer dramatisch.

Met "Eruption" bijvoorbeeld kan je je zo de stenen voorstellen die in de lucht vliegen, alsook de lavastroom die zich een verwoestende weg baant. In compleet contrast krijgen we dan weer extreem rustige nummers zoals "Arctic", "Windswept", "Expanse" en "Arid" waarin mooie kleine melodietjes verwerkt worden tussen zachte klanktapijtjes, elk onderwerp werkt perfect beschrijvend. Een gelijkaardig patroon, maar met een andere uitwerking, wordt gebruikt op nummers zoals "Force of Nature", Deep", "Desolate" of "Endangered". Hier is rust het laatste wat je in gedachten krijgt. Directe beelden van hoe krachtig, fel en zelfs angstwekkend de natuur wel kan zijn, worden in je opgeroepen.
