Nebula Drone A Long Fade Into Virtual Light

This is an unusual disc. Part Berlin school, part ambient, part electronic experimental, at times it seems a bit of a jumble, but when it comes together, it really works. Teutonic fans will be itching for something, anything to happen during the 14-minute title track. A meandering, moody piece, it's very well done, but an odd selection to try to grab the listener with. As such, I found this disc really hard to get into at first, but once I spent some time with it, I discovered some hidden gems further in.

The typical SMD listener would be much more comfortable skipping to track two, 'Lazy polycrystalline accordances.' Although I've grown to love the subtle nuances of the opening piece, this second track is the real deal. A quiet pulse gradually fades in. Chugging rhythms and male choirs are full of promise, very Schulze-like but not overly derivative at all. Guitar leads are laid just right over the top, powerful but not too heavy. Three-quarters into the track, the bubbly sequence is classic, and we begin to relax and think we're right at home. Dark sinister atmospherics take over for the last couple of minutes. Very cool. 'The Roswell Documents' has a long vocoder section that has me straining to hear what they are saying, but I don't get it.

Much better is 'Most colorful bubbles of mud' (!), which begins with thudding sounds that pan back and forth, sort of a cross between a slamming door and something else, I'm not sure what. Light ethereal synth textures then drift in, very bright. A few minutes in you'd decide this is another ambient piece, but then total vintage Schulze sounds emerge again at the 6:00 mark and continue energetically for several minutes. This is a great track featuring wonderful twists and turns, it's hard to know what to expect next. After a couple minutes of abstract sounds, 'Blue and opalescent dialogue' finds itself in the same Schulze-like groove, again proving irresistible. 'Moving back to liquid dreams' mellows things out to finish, full of light and bright shimmers. Give this disc a lot of attention and the rewards will definitely appear, but some of you may lose patience before getting there. (PD)

Dit is een ongewoon schijfje, deels Berlijnse School, deels ambient, deels elektronisch geëxperimenteer, soms lijkt het een beetje een zootje maar alles valt op zijn plaats - het werkt. Duitse fans zullen snakken dat er iets gaat gebeuren gedurende het 14 minuten durende beginnummer, de titeltrack. Een rustig voortkabbelend stuk, heel goed gedaan maar een rare keuze om de luisteraar zijn aandacht te beginnen vragen. Zo dus vond ik het erg moeilijk om erin te komen, maar na een tijdje ontdekte ik de verborgen talenten.

De typische SMD luisteraar zal misschien gewoon doorzappen naar track 2, "Lazy Polycrystalline Accordances". Alhoewel ik toch gewoon was geworden aan de subtiele veranderingen van het openingsnummer is de 2e track echt super. De klanken komen zachtjes op. Verbazende ritmes en mannenkoren klinken veelbelovend, soms heel KS maar niet overdreven. Gitaarsolo's worden erop gelegd, krachtig maar niet te hard. Rond driekwart van de track klinkt de sequence klassiek, we relaxen en voelen ons thuis. Donkere sinistere atmosferen nemen het laatste deel voor hun rekening. Erg goed. "The Roswell Documents" heeft een lange vocodersectie, ik versta echter niet wat er gezegd wordt.

Beter is "Most Colourful Bubles of the Mind" (!), hetwelk begint met ploffende klanken die voor en achter verschijnen, een soort kruising van een dichtslaande deur en nog wat anders, ik weet niet wat. Etnische klanken komen er dan bij, heel helder. Na een paar minuten heb je door dat dit weer een atmosferisch stuk is, totdat, na ongeveer 6 minuten, een wel erg KS klinkend geheel te voorschijn komt en enkele minuten erg energiek blijft aanhouden. Dit is een geweldige track vol met bewegingen, wat kunnen we nu nog meer verwachten? Na een paar minuten vol abstracte klanken vindt "Blue and Opalescent Dialogue" zich terug in een KS ritme, weer onweerstaanbaar.
