From reading the booklet it seemed to me that on this album Jonn had gone back to a more melodic style as on albums such as 'Midsummer Century,' and 'Tingri' rather than the recent superb 'Dream Journeys', 'Spirit Keepers' and 'Hidden World'. The first few tracks seemed to confirm this suspicion as they are probably the most romantic numbers he has recorded to date.

On the opener (the title track) lush soft pads surround you like lying on a mountain of comfortable cushions and a gentle piano melody, with hardly any rhythm, weaves a spell ideal for late night listening with the one you love. This mood in carried over into 'Lovers in Motion'. Things are a bit more upbeat (that is the motion I suppose!) though hardly heavy metal. The pace of the rest of the tracks lies somewhere between these two but always things are rather pleasant, even serene. At times however things get extremely 'sweet' as on 'Autumn Leaves', the only track on the album Jonn did not write himself. I can just imagine my Grandparents dancing to it!

'Starshower' isn't too dissimilar in mood but even more so. The twee filter wouldn't just be tripped, it would probably self-destruct. Then we enter the second half of the album and the mood changes quite a bit. It's still extremely pleasant but now the tracks become much more dreamy, even cosmic. Sure, 'Evening Shade' did have a sax solo but it had a rather lazy feel and just fitted somehow. 'Deep Mystery' is a pure floater which wouldn't have been out of place on 'And The Stars Go With You'. On 'Lumahai' we actually get a deep sequence quite low in the mix and some subtle use of percussion. There is even some really nice use of flute which I am pretty sure is from the guest musician Gary Stroutsos who also collaborated with Jonn on the excellent 'Hidden Worlds' CD.

'From Here to Eternity' is the longest track at almost nine minutes. Cosmic pads mix with the gentle sound of the sea. It's very peaceful and brought images in my mind of standing on a beach during a warm summer night looking up at the stars. So, this really is an album of two halves. If you have liked all Jonn's work to date I would have thought you would also like this. For my own personal tastes the first half was way too romantic but the second contained some of the best space music I have heard from him. (DL)

Uit het boekje kon ik opmaken dat John met dit album was teruggegaan naar een meer melodische stijl zoals op "Midsummer Century" en Tingri", verder verwijderd dus van de geweldige "Dream Journeys", Spirit Keepers" en Hidden World". De eerste tracks bevestigen deze veronderstelling omdat ze waarschijnlijk het meest romantische zijn wat hij tot nu toe heeft opgenomen. Op de openingstrack (de titeltrack) wordt je omgeven door zachte tapijtjes alsof je op een berg zachte kussens ligt. Een pianomelodie, bijna zonder ritme, weeft zijn netten, ideaal om te beluisteren op een avond, tezamen met je geliefde.

Deze stemming houdt aan in "Lovers in Motion". Dan komt er wat meer beat in maar dit is zeker geen heavy metal. Het tempo van de andere tracks ligt zowat tussen deze beide in, het blijft altijd vrolijk klinken, zelfs wat sereen. Soms wordt het wel erg zoet zoals op "Autumn Leaves", de enige track op het album die John niet zelf schreef. Ik kan me zo voorstellen dat mijn grootouders hierop zouden dansen! "Starshowers" is gelijkaardig, dus meer van hetzelfde. Waarschijnlijk zou de 'soft'-filter nu aan zelfdestructie doen. Dan gaan we naar het tweede deel van de CD en hiermee verandert de stemming. Het blijft vrolijk maar de tracks worden wat dromeriger, zelfs wat kosmisch. Ja' "Evening Shade" heeft een saxsolo maar op de éne of de andere manier past die hier wel bij. "Deep Mystery" is een zwevend nummer dat niet zou misstaan hebben op 'As the Stars go with You'. Op "Lumahai" krijgen we een diepe sequence, ver weg in de mix en het subtiel gebruik van percussie. Er wordt ook uitstekend gebruik gemaakt van een fluit en ik weet bijna zeker dat deze bespeeld wordt door gastmuzikant Gary Stroutsos, die ook al mee deed op de uitstekende 'Hidden Worlds' CD van John.

"From Here to Eternity" is de langste track met bijna negen minuten. Kosmische paden worden gemengd met het zachte geluid van de zee. Dit is erg vredig en riep beelden bij me op van een sterrenrijke nacht aan het strand. Dit is dus een album met twee gezichten. Als je van John's werk houdt, zal je hier ook van houden. Naar mijn eigen smaak was de eerste helft te romantisch maar de tweede helft bevat van de beste space-music die ik ooit hoorde van hem. (DL)
