This is the latest offering from the Databloem sub label Dataobscura and what an interesting release it is too! If you are into inventive but also fairly accessible cutting edge electronica it should be for you. 'Shamool' gets underway with a cool infectious beat emerging out of chaotic percussion. Bell type tones float above it all, slowly fading away, providing a stark contrast to the underlying layers.

Without a break we move straight into 'Sap'. From a beginning of windy pads a percussive melodic loop forms and a very delicate melody beautifully falls into place. Even though it is quite a simple track in many ways it drew me in and kept me hooked in a similar way to some of Roedelius' work. 'Koft' kicks off with another infectious modern ambient type beat. It is wonderfully produced, starting and stopping at just the right times, keeping the listener on his toes. The backing sounds are extremely subtle but spot on. Yet again I was captivated. This is modern Electronic Music at its very best. 'Wodge' is in complete contrast to the earlier tracks as a plucked string melody settles over shimmering pads accompanied by gentle percussion. A slow bass / snare rhythm joins in but doesn't dominate too much, just providing a little structure. It's a rather beautiful relaxing number.

'Extrol' on the other hand is very different being a collage of looped clicks, backward type sounds and other effects. 'Tres-Bas' combines a high register drone with a bass throb. Dark, slow melodic pads are layered over the top. It's very moody, almost melancholy. 'Vrombir' lasts less than a minute and yet is probably the most experimental track sounding like some of the weirder Cluster. 'Bern' has a similar feel to 'Tres-Bas'. 'Luena' on the other hand is, again, very different. Echoing bell tones drift into the ether over very subtle colouring provided sparingly but at just the right moment and with perfect emphasis in the mix. It's another intriguing but also captivating track.

'Xingu' follows straight on as does the final number 'Coimbra'. They are the most cosmic and floating tracks here that wouldn't have been out of place on a Robert Rich or Vidna Obmana album. If you have liked the other Databloem label recordings I would have thought you would like this. It is my favourite so far. (DL)

Dit is de jongste productie van Dataobscura, het sublabel van Databloem en dit is een zeer interessante uitgave. Als je valt op inventieve maar ook op toegankelijke EM, kan dit wat voor jou zijn. "Shamool" begint met een aanstekelijke beat die ontspruit uit chaotische percussie. Belachtige klanken zweven hierboven en sterven dan zachtjes uit, een sterk contrast leverend met de onderliggende lagen. Zonder een pauze gaan we naar "Sap". Vanuit een begin met winderige tapijtjes en percussieve melodische loops wordt een gevoelige melodie gecreëerd. Zelfs al lijkt dit op het eerste zicht een vrij simpele track, toch trok deze mij er helemaal in en deed me op een bepaalde manier aan het werk van Roedelius denken.

"Koft" begint direct met een andere infecterende, moderne ambient beat. Dit is een geweldige productie en start en stopt op de juiste momenten, de luisteraar gevangen houdend. De achtergrondklanken zijn extreem subtiel en zitten op de juiste plaats. Ja, ik was hierin gevangen. Dit is moderne EM op zijn best. "Wodge" heeft een compleet contrast met de vorige tracks, met zijn geplukte stringsmelodie en zachte schemerige tapijtjes, bijgestaan door rustige percussie. Een traag bas/ snare ritme komt hier dan nog bij maar zonder te domineren, enkel om wat structuur te geven – een erg mooi relaxerend nummer. "Extrol" aan de andere hand is weer erg verschillend, eigenlijk meer een collage van klikkende loops, achterwaartse klanken en andere effecten. "Tres-Bas" combineert een hoge drone met een kloppende bas. Donkere, trage melodische paden worden gelaagd – erg stemmig en bijna melancholisch.
