Pete Namlook & Klaus Schulze Dark Side of the Moog 2 (AW)

For the most part this is spooky atmospheric stuff. There are twelve index points and as with the first volume of this series each is roughly five minutes apart. What's more it isn't until just before the eighth of these that get any rhythm or real structure at all! This means that it can be a bit hard going at times and it seemed to come at things from a more Namlook angle to Schulze but whatever, it is very well done. We start with insect noises over what could be the very faint sounds of a city far away. Just before the fourth minute the tranquillity is shattered as a church bell rings out- rather loud it is too. Just past the second index point some strange animal cries out, the bell keeps chiming in the background. There is a great deal of tension in the air which increases the longer the same combination of sounds and effects continues- which is for quite some time, the bell keeps chiming till past the fourth index point!

The animal noises increase to include many different types of beasties. It's rather dark sinister stuff. By the time of the fifth index point splashes of echoing electronics have been added to the otherwise rather organic sounding atmospherics. In the next section the nocturnal wildlife noises depart and are replaced by a small stream, also some distant crashing effects which had probably been there for some time can now be heard more clearly. It is at this point that a meandering lead line comes in followed by soft pads. The sound is now much more electronic, most of the samples having departed. A percussive high register loop starts up just before the eighth index point focusing the mind which in my case had been wandering all over the places during the previous drift and tapestry of samples. A shuffling rhythm joins it and we enter a pleasant almost chugging section the timing being not too dissimilar to that of a train. Then just before the ninth section it's all change and a bass beat comes in, little melodies dancing over the top. It's infectious body moving stuff!

With about seventeen minutes to go to the end of the CD all the rhythm and pulsations die away leaving us in a pleasant state of synthetic float. A typical moody Schulze lead line then comes in hitting the spot perfectly. With ten minutes to go a steady two note sequence emerges. It gradually gets faster and becomes more complex. Rhythm after rhythm joins it and very soon we are hurtling along in a syncopated frenzy. This only lasts a short time however until with about seven minutes to go we return to the nocturnal animal noises which take us to the end. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Voor het grootste gedeelte is dit spookachtig materiaal. Er zijn 12 indexpunten en zoals ook bij deel I van deze serie duurt elk stuk ongeveer vijf minuten. Wat meer is, is dat er voor deel acht helemaal geen ritme of structuur aan te pas komt. Dit betekent dat het soms wat moeilijker kan zijn en daarom lijkt het dus allemaal wat meer van Namlook dan van Schulze te komen - toch erg goed gedaan. We beginnen met insectgeluiden over iets wat op een verre stad lijkt. Rond de vierde minuut wordt de stilte verstoord door een kerkklok, een erg luide kerkklok. Juist na het tweede indexpunt komen er vreemde dierengeluiden, de klok luidt op de achtergrond.

De spanning is om te snijden en stijgt nog meer naarmate deze klankcombinatie blijft hangen, en dit is wel een tijdje, de klok blijft luiden tot na het vierde indexpunt! Bij de insecten komen er nog meer soorten bij - dit is een erg donker en sinister gedeelte. Rond deel vijf komen er echoënde elektronische klanken bij, waar het hiervoor enkel atmosferisch was. In het volgende deel verdwijnt het dierlijk nachtleven en maakt plaats voor een reeks crashende effecten, die waarschijnlijk hiervoor ook al aanwezig waren op de achtergrond.
