Pete Namlook & Move D Home Shopping

The last Move D and Namlook CD I reviewed was 'Live in Heidelberg 2001'. Here we have another live (in the studio I think) offering from that town, this time from the following year. A spot on cyber tribal type rhythm gets 'Bad Hair Day' underway, a heavily processed vocal sample acting as a second percussive loop. We settle into quite a groove as other percussive vocal effects are added. This really is excellent stuff. In the third minute the rhythm mutates into something much more 'electronic' sounding and a lovely little lead melody meanders over the top taking us to a cool relaxed slightly jazzy section at the end.

'Nanotube' begins with a throbbing pulse. We then get a fairly formless collage of uncluttered tones and effects out of which emerges a slow rhythmic loop initially providing structure rather than forcing things forward. Little note flourishes / melodic motifs then contrast with deep bass rumbles which you feel as much as hear. The beat develops and gets under the skin. I found my head nodding to it. With four minutes to go it departs and the lead detail now becomes rather bass laden, not exactly melodic but interesting nevertheless. We're straight into a staccato rhythmic loop on 'Flexdollars', other percussive beats bouncing over the top. Indeed this piece is all about different rhythms combining, changing, coming and going in a rather exquisite way. I liked it a lot. 'Arm Candy' uses a soup of electronic bleeps and whooshes out of which another slow rhythmic loop emerges. The melody line initially sounds like a child's glockenspiel but then progresses to have Oriental stylings. Other rhythmic lines are added combining rather strangely, even chaotically near the end. 'Mouse Potatoes' comes to life with breathy metallic drones. A bleepy sequence sounds a bit like some strange alien creature taking its first unsteady steps. It becomes somewhat hypnotic embellished with various trippy effects.

A quirky / jazzy lead wanders over the top. Just over half way in all is change, the original rhythm departing to be replaced by a slow steady beat. Trippy effects and sci fi type sounds still take the prominent role. 'Detox' combines melody and faint restrained rhythms in a somewhat disjointed way initially resulting in a strange uneasy feel but within a couple of minutes the mind becomes adjusted to it and it actually starts to sound rather pleasant if somewhat sleepy and lazy. Its a track which is easy to get on with but with an interesting / odd quality to it. I suppose that could sum up the whole album actually. (DL)

De laatste Move D & Namlook CD die ik besprak was 'Live in Heidelberg 2001'. Hier hebben we een andere live (in de studio, denk ik) opname uit deze stad, ditmaal uit 2002. Een cyber tribal type ritme zet "Bad Hair Day" op weg, een erg vervormde stemsample gedraagt zich als een tweede percussieloop. Bij deze 'echte' groove komen er nog meer vocale percussie effecten bij. Erg goed! Rond de derde minuut muteren de ritmes naar iets meer 'elektronisch' klinkend waarbij een overkoepelende mooie solo ons mee neemt naar een relaxt jazzy sfeertje, tegen het einde aan. "Nanotube" begint met een bonzende puls, dan krijgen we een vrij vormeloze collage van ondefinieerbare klanken en effecten van waaruit zich een trage ritmische loop ontwikkelt, meer bedoeld om wat structuur te geven dan om alles voorwaarts te stuwen.

Kleine melodiemotiefjes contrasteren dan met diepe bassen die je eerder voelt dan hoort. De beat evolueert en kruipt onder je huid, mijn hoofd knikt mee op deze muziek. Met nog 4 minuten te gaan verdwijnt de beat en de solo wordt dieper, niet direct melodisch, toch erg interessant. We komen direct met een staccato ritmische loop terecht in "Flexdollars", met nog meer percussie. Dit stuk draait rond combinaties van allerlei verschillende ritmes die veranderen, komen en gaan en dit op een uitstekende manier.
