Robert Schroeder New Frequencies 1 Play: Mid-Fi Hi-Fi (Excerpt from track 'Oxidation') |
An insistent rhythm strikes up then ‘Rhythm Dancer’ gets into full swing as a high register melodic sequence skips away over the top. This is positive, joyous stuff; full of energy but with a great deal of subtlety at the same time. As things progress it gains even more oomph. Strange as it might seem there are definite echoes of Asana here. ‘The Reason Why’ has a rather dreamy start with occasional vocal samples. It is a mid paced chugging number with little melodic stabs. As before it’s full of positive vibes. ‘I Like It’ again features vocal samples repeating the track title and settles into a real blissed out groove. A rapid but not too in your face lead line fizzes to the surface while slower pads add a softening sigh. ‘Twitter my Mind’ is an easy to get on with laid back chugger, ideal for a lazy summer’s day. ‘Falling Down’ has a bit more bight, possessing a sort of growling quality right from the off but with contrasting playful staccato leads. ‘I Feel so Good’ is underpinned with subtle organ. A jaunty loop and shuffling beat propel us forward, further leads drifting this way and that as we go. Indeed there are some of the best melodies on the entire album here. It’s another piece to set just the right vibes for that summer holiday. ‘Carebbian Nights’ rumbles into existence, brighter sonic flourishes creating a heat haze feel spreading a comforting warmth. ‘A Night in Space’ has mellotron type backing. It does have some restrained rhythm but in fitting with the title it is all rather serene and floating. Cosmic it might be but this is a tranquil corner of the universe, no dark brooding stuff here, though it does pick up a little more energy as we near its conclusion. The highlight is the most gorgeous lead that drifts by seeping into the soul. ‘From Heart to Heart’ has some rather humorous samples to get us underway then the pace quickens. Sequences run alongside the rhythms with beautiful melodies weaving amongst all the pulsation, lovely velvet toned tron making a reappearance. More shuffling percussion gets ‘Rockntronic’ underway and we are soon in an insistent groove, soft pads sighing in the background- more music for by the pool. ‘Oxidation’ is one of the most high-energy track here, a real body mover but still with its tranquil interludes. It’s a great way to finish. Probably the best track here. There is a sort of tongue in cheek playfulness that permeates the entire disc. DL
