This is a document of two concerts, just over a year apart (one was in 2000, the other 2001) which Rudy performed in his native New Zealand. He is mainly known for his ambient compositions but also turns his hand to sequencer based music from time to time. This CD shows examples of both styles. Slow wordless dronal chants, deep flute sounds (Nick Prosser's contribution to the project) and haunting pads give 'Eclipse' a slightly ethnic feel. Its so smooth and relaxing I found myself closing my eyes letting myself drift along with it. We float straight into 'Between Worlds'. Actually without the index points on the CD I sometimes wouldn't have known where one track finished and the other began. It becomes a synth dominated piece though just as serene as its predecessor.

The first sequence, a nice deep one emerges on 'Digital Star Streams', another lively one fizzing over the top. Its an excellent track which should appeal to mid to late seventies Tangerine Dream fans. 'Journey Through Haunted Lands' again features the flute which appropriately conjures up ghostly images over faint synth backing. There are also some vocal effects which sound very at home in such a setting.

'Kaleidoscopic Imagery' returns us to sequencer backing. A lovely purposeful one starts low in the mix. It isn't long before it becomes more strident but without completely destroying the delicate atmosphere woven by some lovely lead lines. The sequence was again very TD sounding but the melody was nothing like and yet it all fitted together so well- a wonderful piece of music. 'Magical Sunset' gives us more of the tranquil / lonesome flute and shimmering synth combination. Its supremely relaxing. We start the other concert with 'Sterrenhemel'. The sound of tinkling bells and faint metallic tones are joined by swelling synths. It has a vast feel to it but at the same time remains quite tranquil. Its as if looking at mountains as they are slowly obscured by cloud. If we are to follow the pattern already set on the album 'Mechanismo' would have to be an upbeat number and sure enough it is. What a belter it is too with two sequences, one bass and the other high register bouncing off each other nicely. The lead lines are simply wonderful, melodic and full of excitement.

'Sfumato' features synths, plucked strings and very gentle vocal touches to act as a short peaceful bridging section to 'Thinking of KLEMdag', yet another excellent sequencer based number. Its not thunderous stuff but still very effective. There is loads of movement, each element constantly changing. It drew me in, my attention being drawn this way and that. In some ways its all rather simple but at the same time spellbinding - I loved it.

'Moonwater' finishes things off in suitably tranquil fashion. What a wonderful album this is showing how both sides of his talent, sound manipulation / atmospherics can live in perfect harmony with rhythmic sensibilities. My favourite album by Rudy Adrian so far. (DL)

Dit is muziek van 2 concerten, met een tussentijd van een jaar (het éne in 2000, het andere in 2001), die Rudy gaf in zijn thuishaven Nieuw Zeeland. Hij is het meest bekend van zijn ambient composities maar maakt af en toe sequencergebaseerde muziek. Deze CD laat beide stijlen horen.

Trage woordloze drone-achtige gezangen, diepe fluitklanken (Nick's bijdrage) en huilende tapijtjes geven "Eclipse" een etnisch gevoel. Dit is zo zacht en relaxerend dat ik mijn ogen voelde sluiten en dat ik mezelf liet meezweven op deze prachtige muziek. We drijven verder naar "Between Worlds". Zonder de indexpunten op de CD zou ik niet geweten hebben wanneer het éne nummer stopt en het andere begint. Dit stuk wordt gedomineerd door synthklanken maar is even sereen als zijn voorganger. De eerste sequence, een mooie diepe, komt te voorschijn op "Digital Star Streams", met een andere levendige erbovenop. Een uitstekende track met een mid- tot laat-70's TD-gevoel. "Journey trough Haunted Lands" is weer met fluit die spookachtige beelden tovert over het synthlandschap. Ook duiken er enkele vocale effecten op. "Kaleidoscopic Imagery" is terug een sequencerstuk. Een mooie doelgerichte begint laag in de mix, deze wordt spoedig dominanter doch zonder de delicate atmosfeer te verstrooien die geweven wordt rond heel mooie sololijnen. De sequence is weer erg TD, integendeel tot de melodie, maar toch gaat het zeer mooi tezamen – ook een heel mooi stuk.

"Magical Sunset" geeft ons meer van de trage/eenzame fluitklanken in combinatie met schemerige synths. Heel erg relaxerend. Het andere concert begint met "Sterrenhemel". Twinkelende belletjes en vage metaalklanken gaan hand in hand met de aanzwellende synths. Stevig gefundeerd maar het blijft rustig. Het is alsof we naar de bergen kijken die zachtjesaan versluierd worden door wolken. Het patroon volgend van het album zou "Mechanismo" een upbeat nummer moeten zijn en dat is het zeker. Een lage en een hoge sequence spelen tegen elkaar in. De solo's zijn gewoonweg mooi, melodisch en vol spanning. "Sfumato" gebruikt synths, geplukte strings en zeer fijne vocalen en werkt zo als een brug naar "Thinking of KLEMdag", weer een uitstekend sequencergebaseerd nummer. Niet explosief maar het werkt. Er is heel veel beweging, elk element verandert constant. Het trok mij er volledig in. Op één manier is dit allemaal vrij simpel, maar erg boeiend en daar houd ik van.
