Open Canvas
Nomadic Impressions
The artist behind Open Canvas is Gregory Kyryluk, better known to smd members as Alpha Wave Movement. Apparently the music was considered so different to AWM that it warranted a different name. After hearing this album a few times it is evident that the music is at a tangent to the AWM style, though unsurprisingly the underlying foundations are stylistically similar. When I first heard this album I found it extremely uninspiring, and though it has grown on me I still think it is basically inferior to the AWM output. There is an Eastern tinge running through the whole album - nothing wrong with that, and as a blissed out venture it has its strengths with endless laid back rhythms and simplistic motifs. However, the rhythms are nothing to write home about and melodically it lacks the infectious guile of the themes on ‘Transcendence’ for example. Overall this isn’t a bad album by any means, however for me it lacks any sort of qualities which encourage further exploration. As such I will await the next AWM release instead. (GG)
