The sub title to this album 'Piano Solos' puts you in little doubt as to what to expect here, as basically each piece is for solo piano. Apparently Robert often includes piano interludes in his concerts so even though this could be thought of as another diversion from his more 'ambient' offerings it wouldn't be surprising to his long term fans (especially those who have been to see him live) that he should decide to release just such an album.

Each track is improvised and they all have that feel to them, in the best sense. Sitting at an instrument and creating in such a way is the ideal vehicle for a musician to create a piece directly from the soul. Of course not every piece will be successful and there will be times when the mood is just not right but what we have here is a collection of the best pieces, all of them extremely enjoyable. I wouldn't say that they sound particularly classical but all are pleasantly melodic with an easy to get on with contemporary feel. Many of the tracks start in one gentle pattern and slowly progress changing direction as they go so you never quite know what to expect next.

At times the pace is slow and dreamy and at others rapid, sometimes all within the one track. I have really chosen the perfect time to listen to such a collection of music as it is early Sunday morning and all is peaceful, the sun sometimes shining through a break in the clouds as I look out of my window but any other tranquil moment would do, especially at night. If you ever feel the need to chill out after listening to a series of more traditional SMD stuff then this should just fit the mood perfectly. Your partner might even like it! (DL)
