Pete Namlook & Tetsu Inoue Shades of Orion 2

Volume 1 of this series has been one of our biggest sellers of all Namlook related releases (not counting the 'Dark Side' and 'Virtual Vices' series). The only other release which comes close is another Tetsu Inoue collaboration '2350 Broadway'. I was therefore delighted to hear that Volume 2 has now been re-released on Ambient World.

Shimmering cosmic pads create a feeling of peacefulness. Its as if I'm in suspended animation but still faintly aware of my tranquil surroundings. The sounds chosen are simply exquisite. The background tapestry is ever shifting, if you concentrate it can really draw you in but then again it works just as well if you simply let the music wash over you. With the third index point things do take a slightly darker turn but not overly so. A very faint celestial organ sound can be heard in the background. Things then descend to almost silence, faint but very deep bass drones mix with higher register pads which are like the ringing of a bell without the initial strike.

It's all quite spooky actually as we move past the fourth index point. Bright hissing sounds mix with the dark backing, as do sci fi type effects. This really is wonderfully 'visual' stuff. The fifth index point heralds more calm drones and gentle pads. We get variations of this for the next few sections gradually becoming more metallic sounding as we progress. By the eighth section more cosmic twitters and other effects are being added. Later on in Index 9 things become calmer but also darker, the pads taking on a sort of cosmic wind type sound. There are some very low frequencies that can hardly be heard but will nevertheless test your speakers. The next index point introduces a very low slow pulse and a 'ticking' loop along with more ethereal pads. It's very relaxing but also quite hypnotic. By the time we get to index point 12 we are back to deep space floating on shimmering metallic drones. Slight percussive detail is added for the next section. By the finish of section 14 the mood has changed again becoming somewhat gloopy or even swamp like and this is how we finish. (DL)

Nederlandstalige versie

Volume 1 van deze serie was voor ons één van de best verkopende cd's uit de Namlook producten (zonder dan te spreken van 'Dark Side …' of de 'Virtual Vices' series). De enige andere productie die in de buurt komt is een andere Tetsu Inoue samenwerking '2530 Broadway'. Daardoor werd ik opgewekt, te horen dat Volume 2 nu heruitgegeven was op het Ambient World label.

Schemerige kosmische paden creëren een rustgevende sfeer. Ik voel me als in een vertraagde film maar blijf me toch bewust van mijn omgeving. De gekozen klanken zijn gewoonweg uitmuntend. De achtergrond is altijd in beweging, bij concentratie wordt je er bijna ingetrokken, het werkt dus en je laat de muziek over je heengaan. Bij het derde indexpunt wordt de sfeer wat donkerder. Op de achtergrond wordt een kerkorgel gehoord.

Dan valt alles weg tot een bijna volkomen stilte en een erg stille maar diepe basdrum wordt gemengd met hoge tapijtjes, als het getinkel van belletjes, zonder de eigenlijke aanslag. Eigenlijk klinkt dit best spookachtig als we naar het vierde indexpunt gaan. Heldere sissende klanken tezamen met een donkere achtergrond, alsook sci-fi effecten. Dit is heerlijke visualiserende muziek. Punt vijf brengt meer kalme drones en zachte tapijtjes. In de volgende secties krijgen we hier nog wat variaties op, meer metaalachtig klinkend naarmate we vorderen. Meer kosmische effecten en allerlei twitters met sectie acht en verder in sectie negen wordt het wat kalmer en ook wat donkerder, de tapijtjes worden hier een soort van kosmische wind. Ver in de achtergrond horen we erg diepe frequenties, amper hoorbaar maar ze testen wel je luidsprekers.
